Found a mistake in Homecoming while playing catch-up...

Captain
I've just started reading the Voyager relaunch in preparation for catching up on about six or seven years worth of Trek reading. I'm reading Homecoming right now and just found what I think is a glaring mistake. Of course, I'm sure that's not uncommon but still, it seems pretty glaring when Tom Paris is concerned because "I’m getting to meet a Klingon father-in-law tonight."

B'Elanna was half Klingon. Her mother was Klingon and her father was human.

Did anyone else notice that?

Oh well, doesn't detract from what seems like is going to be a really great read. I'm extremely excited at the thought of starting this reading plan I have for planned out for the next however long to bring me up-to-speed.

By reading through the "charting" threads and taking advice from others on this forum, I've put together the reading plan below. We'll see how many months (years) it takes me to get through them all and get "caught up", keeping in mind that new novels will continue to come out the whole time I'm reading! Heck, this isn't even allowing for any of the DS9 relaunch or any of the "extra" series/novels. If they stop publishing Trek lit today, I'm still years behind! It's sure gonna be fun trying to play catch-up though.

P.S. - I welcome any comments, additions or suggestions on my reading plan.

Maybe Miral remarried (this time to a Klingon) and that's who Tom was referring to? AFAIK, the VOY relaunch says that Miral is still alive at the end of the series.

You might want to consider moving Singular Destiny a little down the list: Full Circle partially places place during the Destiny trilogy, and Singular Destiny sets up the Typhon Pact novels. It's not part of the trilogy, strictly speaking.

Death In Winter takes place before Taking Wing. I would also switch Losing The Peace and A Singular Destiny. Other than that, that looks perfect.

Oh, and some people really dislike the first few A Time To... books; if you just can't get through the first couple, it's important to know that the last three are the only really necessary ones. But if you enjoy them, then read them all. Just know that you don't get to the really great stuff until A Time To Kill.

OK, based on your guys' comments, I've adjusted my reading order to match the one below. Hopefully this will have me in good shape. I am definitely going to be burning the old Kindle up over Christmas and well into the new year!

^ Now we're really getting picky (but that's what messageboards are for, I guess ), but I'd move Full Circle back to just above Unworthy. Full Circle was originally two novels, and those two plus Unworthy would've made a trilogy that went from the old status quo (1), through the major period of transition and change of Destiny etc (2), to the new status quo afterwards (3). A lot of the stuff in Full Circle doesn't resolve or make sense until Unworthy; I think if possible they should be read back to back. Full Circle covers so much time that it's not really possible to read it in chronological order, so I'd consider it and the other Voyager book as a separate unit you can read any time after Destiny.

Plus there's a cute easter egg in A Singular Destiny that's much more awesome if you read it before Full Circle.

I don't think Full Circle was ever intended to be two novels. It was just going to be the continuation of the VGR post-finale series, but when Destiny came along, it was decided that FC would bring the series up to the post-DES timeframe and thus would have to cover a fairly long span of time.

Otherwise, I agree. In terms of story flow, it makes far more sense to keep FC and Unworthy together, and to follow DES with Losing the Peace and A Singular Destiny, the two most direct followups to the trilogy.

OK, I'll take your guys' words for it. The only reason I moved Full Circle back was because Smellincoffee said it partially takes place during the Destiny trilogy. I guess that doesn't mean they're tied together in any way though and Trek novels have never flowed together like a river, especially across the different series. It definitely seems like everything has become a lot more intertwined and connected since all the relaunches than they ever have before though.

Luckily your suggestions are way down the list and I'll be months (or years) getting down that far anyway!

Basically this just takes me back almost to my original list but swapping Losing the Peace and A Singular Destiny around.

Thanks for the advice guys.

No, they are tied together. Full Circle basically has two halves. The first half picks up shortly after Spirit Walk and wraps up its outstanding story threads; then the rest of the book skims over the subsequent two years, depicts what happened to Voyager during the events of Destiny, and then moves the story forward beyond those events. (I'm simplifying, since a lot of the chapters are out of chronological order.)

Still, the book simply works better if you read it after Destiny and immediately before Unworthy.

I don't think Full Circle was ever intended to be two novels.

From my interview with Kirsten from around the time of Full Circle's release:

I initially outlined the story chronologically and intended it to cover two novels. My editor decided that he really wanted the finale of what I originally conceived as ‘Book 2’ to happen at the end of ‘Book 1’, and the only way to do that was to condense and re-structure the stories. I think the result hangs together dramatically but can be jarring and feel a little disconnected structurally. But this was an unavoidable trade-off given the mandate to cover all two and a half years on one book.”
So Kirsten's initial plan were two novels.

^ And it's pretty clear in the novel itself, too. Halfway through, the story resolves and then a bunch of time starts passing and the story changes tone completely.

bfollowell, kodos for reading everything all the way through. Most people don't have the patience and just skip to Destiny. I think you're gonna be much more involved with the characters and storyline, and enjoy it all so much more if you read everything the way you plan to.
