For USS Franklin Fans

Pro-tip for anyone needing it... keep a little sprue tree from every kit handy until finished for carving off slivers from to fill gaps with. Become good enough at whittling sprue and you can carve perfectly shaped fills.

I learned that trick by watching Jed Clampett. lol

Just finished this one myself. I went with the aged and weathered look from the film over the "factory fresh" look.

 

Wow. I don't have the painting guide at hand but IIRC, you really nailed the weathered look as specified. Spot fricken on!

 

Thank you. Yeah, I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. Especially since it was my first time attempting weathering on a model.

 

The USS Franklin is awesome and still fits neatly into Prime. I wonder if in Prime the Franklin crew all died on impact instead, and never found the tech.

 

I like to think they're still there and still angry in Prime.

 

I'm surprised STO hasn't done anything with them yet. I'd also have been down for a novelverse encounter.

 

The Federation never built Yorktown so Edison never found his way off.

 

My only issue with the Franklin is...why the big u-shaped indent in the rear of the saucer!? Does it serve any purpose!?

Mainly I just dislike half-saucers and/or saucers with cut out sections!? Why sacrifice that potential interior space? If the Franklin had a full saucer then the impulse engines could be be moved to there and not be directly under the bridge.

 

So it will balance on the U shaped stand. lol

Pondering the design again in light of your question, imo it is an aesthetic choice, perhaps influenced by horseshoes. It needed some luck to pull off that planetary escape.

I agree with you though, greebles come in all shapes and sizes today. Sometimes I find I can justify the designs by considering the ships role, possible special crew/passenger needs for comfort during FTL space flight, experimental mechanicals or as in this case, the relationship between horseshoes and luck. Sometimes I cannot.

 

Its not like aesthetic appeal is going away.
