I must say, I'm not really fond of that episode. Tho I love Sisko's dedication to family. But I like Ties of Blood and Water better- its a bit more... real? And maybe feels more permanent?

The Visitor is, by far, my favorite Trek episode of any series. Well written, well acted, a wonderfully creative twist on the 'absent father' motif. And not a single phaser beam involved.

One of the greatest Star Trek episodes, if not one of the greatest hours of serialised television. If you are a Star Trek fan or just a fan of good old fashioned drama and you haven't seen it yet, watch this, it will move you close to tears.

I remember when and where I was and how I felt after seeing The Visitor. I can't say that about many other programs I've watched. It was powerful television.

It aired this morning with a horrible cropping of the episode and a ticker warning that Time Warner Cable would be losing Spike TV on New Years Day.

It was a very moving episode. You really see just how good Tony Todd and Avery Brooks really are as actors. Considering that Todd and Brooks never spent THAT much time around each other, you felt that they spent a lifetime together. Although after watching a little behind the scenes kinda thing on the DVD for the Fan Collective:Alternate realities, Tony Todd had a close friend die shortly before that episode and he kind of used that. Although I always liked the way that Jake and Ben interacted, Ben always seemed like a cool dad, sure he could get his 'deep halting voice' and put you in your place, but other times he seemed very compassionate.

Sisko really was unlike any other captain before or since

The episode seriously makes me teary every time I watch it.

Me, too :)

Ditto. I'm not ashamed to say I cried several times, usually when poor Jake was crying. Especially when he says, "Don't you see? We're going to get another chance!" I cried like a baby! -- Red Ranger

Yep, no shame here either. I watched that scene on YouTube recently and that was enough to get me going. If somebody asked me which episode defines Star Trek, I would say 'The Visitor'.

I just wanted to echo what already has been said. "The Vistor" is a true classic!!! A great example of how sci-fi can be used to create great drama and story!!!
