For the first time...

I admit there are times I wish I was like one of them. Where I can blow a hundred dollars of cash on trek related item with getting shopper's remorse. I would love to wear a Starfleet uniform at my job or out anywhere without any care in the world what people have to say or think. These people are living here and I am living like a slave to society because I'm worried what people might think because what I am wearing. I think there should be a holiday where you can wear anything you want just for day in public.

CAST OFF YOUR SHACKLES.

The only one who keeps you in bondage is yourself.

I think you need to go the full immersion route. Gather as much Trek gear as you can muster, ebay should provide you with this and if you look specifically for second hand items it won't cost you too much. Make a huge IDIC out of cardboard and foil and hang it round your neck for good measure. Cut your hair Vulcan style if you think you are too understated and GO FORTH!

The purpose is to experience fear, fear in the face of certain ridicule.

The best was the guy driving down the sidewalk in his Captain Pike wheelchair. I laughed my ass off when I saw that the first time.

Yet, sports fans wear their costumes to work, or on the weekends, or whenever ... they paint their faces up in their favorite team's colors, and they are considered to be perfectly normal.

Thing is, it's exactly the same thing. But for whatever reason, Trekkies are thought of as the weirdos by the general public. What's that about?

IT is completely different.

But then again what amazes me are that people can't tell the difference from sports and a tv show.

Don't make fun. I've been thinking of having my wheelchair done over like that. Plus, I know many people who would be VERY happy if I was reduced to communicating through beeps only...

Did anyone see the guy working at the Radio Shack look at him he like has two heads? I'm suprise he didn't tell Crosby to turn off the camera. The guy that rides that wheel chair in my books is smart....

Trekkies 2 is brilliant. I think Trekkies are the most intelligent, compassionate group of people there are. I am rather geeky in my star trek practice (go to conventions, wear the costumes, speak a bit of Klingon etc) yet still people say "ah but you're not like one of those REALLY nerdy Trekkies! What more need I do!?
It's just that I don't meet their stereotype image.
There are so many Trekkies in the closet and I worry that shows like Trekkies, although amusing, might keep some from coming out.

I used to think Trekkers where fairly enlightened people back in the 80s and early 90s, but I don't think we really are much more than the avg person. I see a LOT of narrow minded, or totally close minded Trekkers, very conservative (politically too but mainly socially) and highly resistant to change.

Did anyone see the recent anthropologists poll of Trekkers that determined that we're 57% female and most of us are over 41? Its interesting because at various times Trekkers were thought of as mostly female (70s and early 80s) then starting in the 80s, mostly male. Its interesting that the pendulum has swung back to female again.

No, actually, it's exactly the same thing.

The general public isn't that bright?

Sorry, a lifetime of participation in fandom means that I know fans are not one bit brighter than the much maligned "general public."

Disagreed.

Well, it wasn't my intention to laugh at anyone who needs to use a wheelchair to get around, but I'm pretty sure the guy on Trekkies wasn't wheelchair-bound.

Besides, he looked ridiculous.

Yes I know. I was just kidding anyway.

Not the part about people wishing I'd shut up though.....

Depends on the context. If he was at a Trek convention, he probably looked fabulous (unless he did a lousy job on the chair)!

But, I agree, anywhere else, he'd look ridiculous. :D

people who think others are weird because they wear what they like or believe are just stupid because if someone likes a certain thing then they shouldn't be criticized (cant spell) over what they like. Nobody is perfect, everybody has their own opinion. Nobody is the same. There are no two people alike. Can't the world just like everyone instead of hating people because they are richer or poorer than someone else. The world s so mean.

For me i would rather wear a football jersy than a star trek outfit. but i dont judge people who do because it is their chosse not mine.:)

Agreed.

Some fans really make the rest of us look bad

Yeah you got a lot of trekkies outthere that are whackos. Buying a bunch of shit that isn't worth anything outside the general market. Be smart and cool and buy gold it the best investment you can have.
