For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck..

No wonder this network can never get any ratings traction. For those of you who live in Chicago, (the #3 Nielsen market in the nation) the season premieres of Smallville and Supernatural will be preempted the 18th of September for a baseball game. You know the drill. The fast nationals will come in high because all the people who watched the game on CW will register, then the finals will drop like a rock.

It's a great network when your season premieres can get preempted for sports. Were it the season premiere of 90210 or their precious Gossip Girl, the CW would reschedule them. For their Thursday shows, they couldn't care less. Oh well, the network is going down the crapper anyway if 90210 doesn't "hit" this season. Literally. Nikki Finke, who wrote for Deadline Hollywood during the strike is convinced that Ostroff's job will be gone (and the CW most likely) if 90210 doesn't deliver, and that the 2008-2009 season will be the network's swan song. She seemed to know what was really going on during the strike. 90210 doesn't premiere against anything new, but once House premieres it's going down the tubes just like Reaper went down the tubes. House draws the exact demo the CW wants, believe it or not. Its youth demo is extremely high.

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

I don't think you can blame the network if its local affiliate chooses to pre-empt its programming to run a local sporting event. The CW affiliate in Chicago is WGN TV; they're the ones who would've made that decision, and they're the ones you should complain to about it. Also, have you checked to find out whether they're rescheduling the premieres for a different day or time? That's what my local stations tend to do with their network programming when there's a sports conflict.

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

Them rescheduling isn't the point. They reschedule on Saturdays. I know that because of the numerous preemptions Chicago suffers. I know it's Chicago's decision, but it's a decision they wouldn't make if this were a real network with real ratings with its season premieres coming up. The merger between UPN and WB was supposed to stop the umpteen sports preemptions that happen every year. It didn't. It's hurt the network's ratings all along. When 3 million is your average, losing 300,000 viewers out of a market is devastating. They don't get to count the viewers from a delayed Saturday viewing in their Nielsens for ad rates. Decisions are made from live viewers in the regular time slot. Spring is particularly bad for the Tuesday slots in Chicago and many other cities with preemptions in college b-ball. Thursdays always seem to get hit from Chicago pro ball teams. The Bulls, Cubs, and occasionally White Sox play on WGN.

The CW has been playing a losing game from day one. It's no wonder the network is on the verge of collapse. If they're counting on 90210 the sequel to rescue their network, the situation doesn't look promising.

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

There are so many reasons to hate The CW, but I think this is more of an affiliate problem than a network issue.

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

Unfortunately, many of CW's affiliates have exactly the same problem--during pro basketball season, baseball season, college b-ball season. My local affiliate will preempt for OSU basketball. Some affiliates have been known to preempt for high school ball. The network is in shambles. It's supposed to be a free broadcast network, but there are still areas where you can't get CW unless it's on a digital cable channel, yet they wonder why all the shows ratings dropped after the UPN/WB merger. The network wanted a fee for some of the former UPN outlets on Time Warner Cable to carry it, and the local affiliates refused to pay. There are people who still don't know it exists after two seasons on the air.

It's a total mess.

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

Quite frankly, I'd much rather watch a local basketball game or baseball game, or whatever, than most anything on CW.

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

So would everyone. That's the problem. The only program on the network that I watch (I love it) is Supernatural. If it weren't for that series, I wouldn't care if the network went under myself. Somehow, I don't think all the money the network execs are throwing at advertising the new 90210 and Gossip Girl is going to change that. They'll go after that narrow young female demo until the network runs aground.

Either The CW will fold, or it will survive long enough to have Dawn Ostroff removed and a new network President/GM hired to turn things around. Unfortunately, Les Moonves seems to like Dawn for some reason, so I assume she isn't going anywhere.

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

That truly sucks, Dorian. If it weren't for Supernatural, I'd wish the network a speedy destruction. Placing all their money and resources on 90210 and GG is stupid, but this is the CW.

Funny, I was going to say the opposite! :p  I hate sports preemptions. I loathe them. And yeah, Chicago stations--well, WGN really--are terrible about it. I remember DS9 getting preempted all the time when I was a kid, and then I'd have to hunt around to find it. It pissed me off to no end.

I'm sorry to hear Supernatural is being preempted on premiere night, Dorian. :(

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

It's not bad for me. I live in OKC, but there are about 100 posters at sn.tv who live in and around Chicago. Lots and lots of SPN fans in Chicago. I usually get Supernatural preempted an average of 3 times a season around here for Oklahoma State basketball. That, however, could increase because Oklahoma City just acquired a pro basketball team, the former Seattle Supersonics. They may play here this fall or get stuck in limbo for a season, but they'll air games either on the former WB outlet or the former UPN outlet here in the city. If its the former WB outlet, I'm looking at a lot more preemptions.

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

90210? After all these years? They're still beating that dead horse? :guffaw:

Oh well. I love baseball. :techman:

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

They're betting the farm on that dead horse. All of the CW's advertising dollars are on 90210 and Gossip Girl. Literally. You'd think nothing else was on its fall schedule. They're pushing those bratty rich white teen girls like nothing else. If 90210 doesn't hit, it's about 70-30 chance this is the network's last season.

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

i'm trying to get a read on Dawn Ostroff, she seems to have total control of the programming, she's definately making tv that she wants to watch, my current feel is that she's a total Airhead with a "Gurlz Rule" attitude

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

Ahhhh, Dawn. She's definitely one of these chicks who doesn't understand the subtle, but vitally important difference between strong, interesting, well rounded, realistic female characters and grrrrrrrrrlllllll power!!!! The former is great. The latter makes me want to gouge out my eyes. Nothing more irritating to a woman over the age of 21 than grrrrrrllllllll power!!

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

^$5 says she has a poster of either a pony or a unicorn in her bedroom

Re: For crying out loud, the CW network NEVER STOPS being full of suck

Believe it or not when this happens and its preempted in the Pittsburgh viewing area they usually move it to My Network TV in the same timeslot or the news channel that CW owns on the upper (satellite) channels.

But I understand what you mean.

When I lived in Atlanta in the 90s, the station that aired that famously pre-empted it over and over for various things. They would typically air DS9 after the event instead of it's 10 p.m. slot. I'd set my VCR to record a 3-4 hour time period just to be sure that it caught DS9. You never knew when there might be overtime, extended event coverage, or just some other zaniness. You didn't have the many "alternate" ways of seeing the programs that you do now, of course.

As far as the big networks go, I have experienced at least two cities where the big networks pre-empted network programming for local stuff. One was in Nashville, where they aired some local school/education type thing instead of Friday night shows (which were new). In Orlando, they had some local telethon thing that pre-empted new net shows. Both of those were on CBS/ABC/NBC major networks. Didn't happen very often like you see with independent type stations, but it does happen once in a while.
