Fleet Whereabouts in Trek XI !!

I,ve watched the film several times and also read the book , but what was the fleet doing in the Laurentian system. Were they fighting klingons,gorn, romulans all just on fleet manoeuvres testing the new daystrom M5 computer .? Any ideas .

Good question. I don't think anyone has pinpointed where the Laurentian System actually is.
