Flashback~Valtane Observation

Yes, this has been brought up before, but things happened quite differently for Valtane in STVI, than in 'Flashback'...

It was cool seeing Sulu, Kang, and Rand...but why did they have to kill off Valtane? (Especially since he was alive and well, minutes after that happened in the film when Sulu finds out about the Klingon homeworld; and towards the end of the film when we see the bridge crew of the Excelsior when Sulu is speaking with speaking with Kirk Enterprise).

From what I understand, the aliens of that particular had something in Tuvok that altered his memory, which is why we see a different version of Valtane's fate...i.e. the fate that didn't happen.;)

Well, at least both instances are 'canon'...so we see what DID happen (the film), and what DIDN'T/COULD'VE happened (the episode).

Or, there are two Valtanes. Twins!

Dmitri Valtane was a Human (and part-Rigellian) Starfleet officer who served as a science officer during the 23rd century. (According to TOS novelization: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country; VOY novelization: Flashback).

His first name came only in the VOY episode. The previously released novel, The Fearful Summons, written by Denny Martin Flinn, gave his full name as Masoud Valtane. Flinn co-wrote the film that gave the character his surname.

I think I'll go with Tuvok's dodgy memory and the memory virus on this one as I also think he got Rand's rank wrong as well, she was a Lt.Comm and a senior officer in "Flashback" but only a Lt JG in the film.

you'd think that Voyager would have continuity advisors and would have spotted this

Well, it hardly looks like an innocent mistake. Rand's role was deliberately made bigger, so why not alter her rank to reflect that? And somebody we semi-know from the movie had to die, so why not pick somebody who has lines, and then alter his rank and other stats to fit the new plot? A continuity person wouldn't have helped here: he or she would simply have been overruled.

Agreed that since none of this is consistent with the original movie, it would be best to think that Tuvok was just hallucinating most of this stuff, using (very few) elements from his real past to beef up a feverish dream that had no basis in reality.
