'Fixing' the DS9 novel reboot: Thoughts.

Apparently you cannot discuss plot in the Literature section. So I'm tossing this out here. If it's not allowed, I'll delete it.

Two main plots for the first books. (Yes, I said books, 2 parts like Avatar?) One is reunion/celebration of Bajor joining Federation. Could even play up the party to counter Andoria LEAVING the Federation.

2nd plot: trouble in the Dominion. Following up on the World's of DS9 books, the Founders are reduced to 2, and Odo has relaxed control over former Dominion worlds. This has turned out TERRIBLE, and several planets in the region are at war for the first time in years. Odo doesn't want to just crush them with the Jem'hadar, so he appeals for Federation help as negotiators/peacekeepers.

Thoughts?

This could also serve as a good reason to keep Ben Sisko & possibly Ezri Dax around. Both are assigned to assist with the diplomatic efforts in the Gamma Quadrant.

All I'd really want "fixed", to be honest, is the reboot's "interperetation" of Ezri and Julian's relationship.

More reconciliation at the end of "This Grey Spirit" between the two--specifically, a spelled-out apology from Ezri for having accused him of not wanting her to do things on her own, etc; NONE of that stuff in "Cathedral" about Julian comparing certain characteristics of Ezri to Jadzia (PLEASE!!!); and above all...

No break-up in "Unjoined"!!! Have Ezri not treat Julian like his POV didn't matter, or get all frustrated at his legitimate concerns--or re-write history and jump to the conclusion that Julians doesn't love her, but Jadzia's ghost!

For goodness sake--it's as if the writers could not accept that Jadzia was gone, so they decided to punish Ezri's fans for it by making her decidedly unlikable--and unrecognizable.


Now...there may be something to be said for that also-out-of-the-blue break-up between Ro and Quark. Her reason?

"Quark, I love you just the way you are--and I don't want you any differently--but I can't have a relationship with someone like that--even though I don't want you to change."

Other than that...hmm...perhaps more Section 31--but show us more of the disturbingly competent and efficient organization of the series, and less of the eyeroll-inducing incompetence seen in Cloak and Rogue.

Aside from that--I didn't really have a problem with the relaunch. Just keep the characters in character...and I will be happy.

My only beef with the relaunch at the moment is having the Julian/Ezri breakup not occur sooner. The Odo plot sounds pretty fascinating, actually. It's an interesting continuation of the end of his story on the TV series.

Ironically, RyuRoots, you may actually have a point about their breaking up sooner.

Frankly, even that would have been better than reading in agony, watching their relationship--and their friendship--crumble.

I much rather would've had them grow, even with conflict--have Ezri fess up and admit her failures (and Julian, too--I'm not neccesarily letting him off the hook) and reconcile things.

I really don't have any complaints through Unity, but I do find the books post-Unity to be somewhat lacking. I guess some of my least favorite elements of the show ended up being some of the focal point of the latter novels (mainly The Mirror Universe).

What I loved about the earlier novels was how much more focused they seemed. I especially loved how they picked up plot points from early TNG and incorporated them into the DS9 mythology so seamlessly.

I also wish they had a better timeline figured out for aligning with the other Trek properties. With the inter-connected nature of the books, I know myself and many fans I've encountered on-line were eager to see how Voyager's return affected DS9, as well as being on the same page with TNG post-Nemesis. Now, we've had the gap between The Soul Key and Destiny.

I would have liked to see Ezri mature and accept command of the Destiny as well as seeing a natural evolution of the characters on DS9. The Destiny trilogy had such a little focus on those characters, especially Ben Sisko. With his history with the Borg, I would have loved to see him more involved in the crisis, as well as in the post-Destiny, pre-Typhon Pact books.

It looks like the Trek novels are committed to jumping ahead for DS9. That's part of why I suggested a 'reunion' plot, it gives us a chance to catch up with everyone while forwarding the plot.

I liked it overall, I just wish there hadn't been the unfortunate gaps in the books- both releases and the "jump ahead".
