Fixing A Hole-A Look At The New Beatles Box Set

Is Apple Corps (records) still in a hissy fit about Apple Computer offering music at all?

They finally settled that, but you have to wonder if that history is what's keeping them from dealing with iTunes.

I'm assuming that the money will eventually be too much for them to ignore, but I still wouldn't count on it happening this year.

Yoko has said that tomorrow's Apple media event will bring the Beatles music to iTunes. Linky I hope she wasn't full of shit (as she so often is).

Tomorrow?

Oh, right, I keep forgetting I live in the future now. :p

Happy 9/9/9! I'll be listening to the White Album tonight.

I hate you. :p

I have to wait until tomorrow morning for the UPS guy to deliver it. Thankfully, UPS usually shows up at my house around 9 A.M.

Oh, don't misinterpret me. I don't have the complete collection and I won't be getting it anytime soon (I simply don't have the space for it where I am). However, I am simply enjoying 9/9/9 right now. :D

So I take it these remasters aren't going to be your usual "LOL LETS COMPRESS THE HELL OUT OF EVERYTHING AND MAKE IT LOUDERZ" affairs?
I listened to a radio documentary (It's been Beatles Week on the BBC) that mentioned the new remasters - they talked to one of the engineers that worked on the project, and he mentioned things like digitally fixing little signal drop-outs that were present on the original master because of a tape splice, amongst other things.

So no, it's not just paying lip service to remastering. It's taken them years, and they've done it properly.

:D

Wal-mart had the individual CDs out early on Tuesday. I don't have the money to get the full set right now. I originally told myself I would wait. But I could not resist and decicded to buy one now to get a taste. Started at the beginning with Please, Please Me. It sounds fantastic! You can hear John's voice crack at the end of each line of lyrics in "Twist and Shout"!

Yes. Paul Gambacini was on GMTV a few mintues back saying that he's been listening to these albums for years and he's hearing things he never heard before. He said at time it's like having Paul or John in the room with you. Sounds exciting!

Got my stereo boxset.

Fucknig fantastic - been listening to these amazing recordings for years and never heard them this good in any format before, just superb.

^ I love that bit. :D

It was Paul, according to Geoff Emerick.
It sounds like John flubbing the backing vocal to me. The only way it could be Paul is if Paul went and recorded a backing vocal of his own.
But it was nothing to do with backing vocals, apparently. From the website, quoting Emerick's book:
John Lennon caught the curse during the playback and said "Paul hit a clunker on the piano and said a naughty word, but I insisted we leave it in, buried just low enough so that it can barely be heard. Most people won't ever spot it… but we'll know it's there."

Well, I just returned with my Stereo box. It was cool experience just going to get it. Along the way, The Radio station was having a Beatles day, which was of course getting me more pumped. I live in memphis now, so the music stores here are pretty fancy compared to the small town I used to live in. As I walked in the store, The new versions were playing loudly, it was Yesterday. Magical Mystery Tour was playing silently on the screens around the store. They had a massive display with the new releases and all theother beatles merchandise they could cobble together from the store (Cross Marketing!!!)

Anyway, there were a couple people in front of me that got it, and the music store guy said they had been selling a lot (no suprise). Anyway, I got some free Beatles magnets for purchasing the set, so that's cool.

I haven't listened to anything yet, I'll likely wait till tonight when I have time to relax and really savor it. I did peak at the packaging and design however. It's really beautifully done. I don't really like Digipacks, but the original artwork and the sleek and durable outer case make up for it. It's quite striking.

From what I heard over the store's sound system, I'm in for a treat.

Also, is anyone getting The Mono set. I'm not obsessive enough to purchase that too, but I'd be interested in seeing how it fares.

Got my Stereo boxset. After a few hours with Beatles: Rock Band, I'm sitting down to listen to it. I'm listening to Revolver, right now. The sound quality is just fantastic.

Except that Paul's lead vocal is in front of it. So, unless Paul went and did a separate backing piano track and then overdubbed his lead vocal on top of it, it doesn't make sense that it's Paul. Also, Paul was a perfectionist on his own tracks; if he'd flubbed a piano backing track, he'd have rerecorded it.

And yes, I know, Emerick was there; his account carries weight. But it just doesn't sound like Paul to me. *shrug*

^ According to Lewishohn's The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, Paul overdubbed a bass track (that was later discarded) and a vocal track.

I do agree that it doesn't sound like him, and it's not as if I'm any authority - any info I've presented has merely been a result of today's Googlings and a rummage through a PDF I have of Lewisohns' book...to be honest, I always assumed it was John or George, myself....:D

Emerick! Do you be truthful or not? We need to know!

:D
