Five Years Ago Today...

On July 3rd, 2002, Lisa made the following post in the Announcements forum:

You must have seen the posters. You must have heard about the trailer. Maybe you've even got the special CD. But just in case you've been under a rock for the past year or so: Trek X is coming.

To celebrate this special Trek event, we've decided to introduce a special forum on the BBS. The 'Star Trek: Nemesis' forum will be a temporary forum created just to discuss this movie. If you want to talk about any aspect of this feature; be it characters, storyline theories, the trailer, the advertising - it belongs in this forum.

We plan on keeping the Nemesis forum open for a while after the movie has opened, until interest has waned in the Remans and that wedding.
When the forum is closed, its threads will be transferred to the TNG forum, and the moderators will move elsewhere on the BBS. It all depends on what happens a few months into the future.

Such a special forum, of course, requires special moderators. Two highly capable young men have agreed to step forward into the breach: Huntingdon and Aatrek. They've both been visible features of the BBS for ages and ages and are familiar with its strange nuances and ways. We're sure they'll do a marvelous job. Welcome guys!

Now, what are you waiting for? There's a new forum to explore!

Those threads never did get transferred into the TNG forum. In February 2003, "Nemesis" became the "Trek Movies" forum, and the board hasn't been the same since (but in a good way).

So please rise and charge your glasses as we toast the first five years of the Trek Movies forum, and look forward to the next five, in the hope that they will bring many new things to discuss.

On a slightly related note, at what point do we begin discussing Trek XI? Official cast announcement, first set report, first teaser trailer? The leadup to Nemesis was exciting, the anticipation of a new Star Trek movie. I'm looking forward to that feeling again!

The mods and admins are currently discussing that amongst ourselves, and to be honest, we aren't sure.

Certainly, the casting announcements will generate a lot more excitement than past films, where the film's stars were a known quantity, and only the "guest stars" were news. But after the cast is announced (possibly at the end of July at San Diego Comic-Con), it'll still be well over a year until the film's release.

I wasn't on staff at the time, so I don't know what motivated Lisa to create the Nemesis forum when she did, but it was only five days after Paramount launched the film's official website (6/28/02, according to Memory Alpha). So that could certainly be a guideline.

The long and short of it is that things are still up in the air, but we are aware of them.

Happy birthday forum! I must admit with some embarrassment that I was against its creation at the time, because I thought the original Star Trek forum wouldn't have enough to talk about without the first six movies. People can be very frightened of change...

Since then, it's become one of my favorite forums here, and the original series forum is doing OK. So I admit I was wrong on that one.

I must admit with more embarrassment that this means I've been here for at least five years!

Honestly, I think that that's the very reason the TOS forum started to get a bit of a "Damn kids! Get off my lawn!" feel to it, at least until the remastered episodes started coming out and gave people something new to talk about.

I hope you don't mind but as I wasn't a member in 2002 I decided to check it out on the Internet Archive wayback machine site and see for myself and for the benefit of others who want to see it, here it is here , the Star Trek Nemesis forum from July 20th 2002.

It was announced long before that, because they started filming in December 2001. We didn't have a devoted Nemesis forum until after Paramount launched an official website for the movie.
