First time watching space 1999

Yeah he didn’t really care much about sf shows that’s probably the reason why all the sf stuff that he did wasn’t very good
I don't think it was that he didn't care, he just had a different view. He was perfect for Saturday morning kids adventure shows and did work on the Super Friends. He would have been right at home with Space Academy and Jason of Star Command. Space:1999, to him, needed to be a light, fun, action series.

I was more bothered by how the Eagle miniatures had docking tunnels extending from the cargo pods when the interior cargo-pod sets had no such things inside them. There was no way to reconcile inside and out. The dimensions of the set interiors and miniature exteriors didn't line up either.

Par for the course for SF TV, especially in those days. The awesome models and the on- set interiors often didn't match up. As cool as the Flying Sub coming out of the Seaview was, there was no real way for it to work. Or the dimensions of the Jupiter 2 (especially when they added a third level in one episode), or the Galileo shuttlecraft.

Year 2 of 1999 also omitted the short walkway between the command module and the passenger cabin. And for all the times those damned Eagle's suffered explosive decompression, the main cast was pretty blasé about flying around in their standard uniforms and cardigans instead of spacesuits. And God forbid they wear helmets unless they're being attacked.
Wow I had not noticed that now that you’ve pointed it out it’s going to annoy me :wah:
Then this will be a short ride through sci-fi for ya.

I've got nothing against light, fun action series, but that's a separate conversation from whether a show is well-written, which 1999 season 2 wasn't. I mean, Superboy was a light, fun action series throughout its first two seasons (seasons 3-4 soft-rebooted it into sort of a proto-X-Files before there was an X-Files), but it was atrociously bad when Freiberger was the sole showrunner and far less bad once Carey Bates took over midway through season 1.

And frankly, even as a kid, I found Super Friends dumber than Space Academy or Jason of Star Command. I always found Filmation's writing smarter and more substantive than Hanna-Barbera's output, so treating them as interchangeable is not going to fly with me.

Space: 1999 The Catacombs website has a good overview on the various Eagle filming models and their dimensions and how well they do, or do not, line up with the studio sets, and the changes to the interior of the cockpit and travel pod between the first and second season.

That’s a great resource—one of the rarer winged craft from 1999

I wish I caught this when I was younger. Looks pretty good. Not sure, if I could sit through it now.
