First Season 2 Images Arrive

The Saurian looks interesting, but he's not really a Saurian. Saurians are purple, with yellow Admiral Akbar eyes, slightly on the sides of their faces. And their skin is the smoother skin of an evolved humanoid, not the thick scaly stuff of an iguana. He didn't evolve on Earth; he shouldn't look like an Earth lizard.

Also, look at the juxtaposition of the Saurian and Saru in the elevator. Saru has this long vaguely-alien body to match his weird alien, yet not too alien, head while the Saurian has a much more alien and wildly animalistic head attached to a more pedestrian human body. I really wish they'd play more with body shapes for the more alien-looking aliens. They're already pouring a lot of money and creative effort into this stuff, and it looks cheesy.

Not to be too negative, I love the CG eyelids, that his name is Linus(?), that he doesn't have 5 fingers (though of course the 4 he has have massive claws on them, like he's his own paleo-ancestor), and that he has alien mannerisms and language, yet is just a guy on an elevator. I'm not sure how I feel about the Jurassic Park Brachiosaurus sneeze...it's supposed to be lighthearted, but...ok?

I'm sure it must have been mentioned somewhere but is Linus a Kurtzmann nod to Ben Linus on "Lost?" I mean it's so clear it must be or am I wrong?

Or maybe it's Linus from Peanuts.

Speaking of uniforms, where does Finnegan fit in? Was that an Academy tunic?

Finnegan.jpg

Yep. It's the TOS cadet uniform.

If you look at the difference between TOS Gorn and Enterprise Gorn, the alterations to the Saurian are very cosmetic.

I think that's the part that appeals. There is a very alien alien on the elevator, and Michael takes the time to ask how they are, and expresses concern for the illness. The sneeze, while comedic (success with vary on that one) reinforces that despite being alien there is common ground. I love that!

I can’t see that being his only appearance.

Plus I don’t think he was talking. I think he couldn’t because of his condition.

Which get's us to my PowerPoint on everything wrong with the Gorn on ENT...

But before we go there, anything further on the Saurian?

Humans have multiple skin colours, why can’t Saurians?

We only ever saw a single Saurian in canon and he was basically a tiny spec on the screen
Any other image is from BTS pictures

Yeah, that was my first thought as to how fans would excuse it, but... That's not at all what the creators were thinking or what they'll do with it anytime soon. Further, if you're going to go for different races of Saurian, again, why choose the blandest Earth reptile route and not go from purple to orange or red or something, again, alien?

What were the creators thinking then?

What about the Klingons between TOS and TMP? The Trill between TNG and DS9? The Andorians and Tellarites between TOS and ENT?

Species change all the time in Trek.

It's interesting that you mention the Gorn on ENT because there they went from the more alien humanoid body for such a deeply reptilian alien to the expected tyrannosaurus form. And they got rid of the alien space-insect eyes and gave them Jurassic Park T-Rex ones, complete with flashlight being flashed on them in the corridor like the kids flashed the T-Rex from the SUV.

I adore it whenever they showcase advances in makeup. It's one of the things I kinda miss about the more alien-of-the-week previous series.

I thought the first Tellarite that showed up on ENT was great, but the later ones less so. Those eyebrows especially were very cheesy.

The Saurian is an advancement. Looks a lot better and more realistic did that dumb rubber face from TMP

The Saurian looks great. I wish they had kept the original style eyes though, black shiny eyes are very 'generically alien'.
