First look at "The Green Hornet"

Or maybe they'll just have to be coy about it.

"You know my great-grand-uncle wore a mask. Kind of a loner, though . . . ."

 Good one. :techman:

Was this movie ever going to be a period piece? Surely that's the whole point of doing a character like this on screen? A 21st-century Green Hornet...I dunno. It'd be like trying to reboot Gunsmoke in modern day New York or something. I don't see how it could work. You obviously can't do Westerns set in the present day, so how could they do this?

Is there inherent about the Green Hornet where the movie should be a period piece?

Not really. He's a masked crimefighter who poses as a criminal to infiltrate the underworld. There's nothing that ties him to a specific era--unlike, say, the Lone Ranger who is a hero of the Wild West, or Zorro who is tied into the romance of Old California.

(Of course, being a total hypocrite, I set my upcomng GREEN HORNET story in the 1960's.)

Actually, it's funny how it works. We don't expect Superman or Batman to be period pieces because they've been running continuously since their inception. But characters like the Green Hornet or the Shadow, who disappear into pop-culture limbo for decades at time, often end up stuck in the era of their glory days--at least in the popular imagination.

Now I have seen people pine for a 30's Superman or a 40's Batman flick even if they don't necessarily expect it to happen.

Well, Batman TAS kind of went that route and it worked amazingly.

Granted, the art direction had a definite thirties vibe, but it wasn't actually set in the past. I'm pretty sure I remember computers and eco-terrorists, etc.

Actions movies with bad guys riding around on horses with masks on saving damsels and stopping bad guys from robbing trains doesn't seem to be "in" these days. They'd probably make his enemy some dude with a steam-powered robo-suit that shoots death rays or some Wild Wild West BS like that

"3:10 to Yuma" was pretty good. Sometimes you don't need to outfit your horse with machine guns to make a good movie.

The new movie seems to be keeping the car and costumes of the 60's. And even the 60's costumes remind me more of the 40's.

Tim Burton's original Batman had an interesting synthesis of different time periods.

Definitely!

And that shot in the trailer, of the Black Beauty rotating into view, was straight out of the old tv show.

I thought the trailer looked pretty good. Don't know much about the Green Hornet to be offended about anything (looking around the web lot's of folks aren't happy about Seth Rogan taking the lead) - I don't think I've seen any of the TV show though I did know about it - but I'm a big Jay Chou fan so I'm going to see this no matter what.

Green Hornet Movie

I'm sort-of surprised no one has made a thread for this upcoming movie staring Seth Rogan.

I dunno. It looks good but at the same time looks like complete crap.

Re: Green Hornet Movie

I'm pretty sure there's a thread a few pages down...there's been a few threads on the film. I'm looking forward to it. I think it looks really fun, not sold on Rogan as Green Hornett but still looking forward to it.

It looks a little too comedic. More post Burton Batman than Nolanverse Batman. But that's probably what they're going for. I need to see more to get a better feel for this movie. It looks like a rental so far.
