First Impressions of Trek (before you began watching)

I only became a full fan of Trek when Enterprise started and it was advertised a lot on TV so I gave it a go and found it so new and exciting.
Before that I'd mostly thought Trek was really stupid looking, I'd based my judgements on DS9 because every time I turned over there was some bizarre looking alien and I just thought "that looks so ridiculous and dumb". After that I'd seen Insurrection in the theater randomly although that had little impact on me whatsoever (surprise surprise) and then saw some TNG which I'd actually loved but it wasn't being shown much. But then Enterprise came along soon and it was aweessommmee. I loved the slick design, the whole sci-fi aspect felt completely new to me. And then I watched TNG and DS9 and was surprised that I liked them even MORE!

So what were your first impressions of Trek before you were a fan, or have you been watching Trek since you were in diapers?

I saw my first episode pre-K, before I knew anything about it (TOS: The Cloud Minders). I was hooked on first sight.

I remember my life before Trek, but I don't remember Trek before I became a fan. My first exposure was through TNG. I hadn't even known Trek existed before that. And I loved it from the get-go, so there was never a time when I thought less of it than I do now.:techman:

As a Voyager baby, impressions I had of earlier Trek from promos, pics etc were:
TOS - campy
TNG - earnest
DS9 - dull (and visually dull)

Suffice to say impressions changed somewhat, though I doubt I'll ever really love TNG the way many do.

I was 4 or 5, Mum sat me down to watch one of the first Next Gen episodes on BBC2. I was blown away by the touchscreen control panels. This was the future!!

I'm writing this on my Android phone, that same futuristic technology made real and commonplace a mere 20 years later. Awesome:)

There was life before Trek? It just shocking the amount of Trek I've watched. I remember watching TOS in rapt wonder at a very young age.

I think I've at least been aware of Star Trek for as long as I've been aware of my existence (so, about twenty-three years). What I remember most distinctly was seeing stuff for Undiscovered Country and thinking it looked really cool. That got me into TOS, and seeing new episodes of TNG around the same time got me into that series as well. I never looked back.

I started watching Trek when I was a little child and immediately liked it so I didn't have any opinion on it before I started watching it.

Ditto, Trek and SciFi has always been part of my viewing, as far back as I remember

Before a friend introduced me to TNG and later DS9, all Trek was to me were excerpts of what I took to be a ridiculous old show with no subtlety and often hilarious acting. It was surprising to learn that there was more to the franchise than the absolute worst of it; for some reason, I don't think I EVER ran across any Trek on television that wasn't TNG S1 or the worst parts of TOS.

I happened through a room where TWOK was on the TV and saw the slug coming out of the ear. I then decided it was not for me.

Later, my cousin took me to see TVH in the theater, and I changed my mind.

Sometime thereafter, I went through all the movies on video and began watching TNG around the time of Season 2. That's when I became officially hooked.

I didn't start following TNG until around 1991. I remember the 1980siness of early TNG, BOTW, the first time we saw the Ferengi and Tasha dying though. We did watch TNG once in a while.

I remember when I thought Spock didn't talk. That was before we had closed captioning at home. Leonard Nimoy hardly moved his lips when talking, at least on our late 1970s TV with the grainy picture, so naturally I thought he just stood there, with Bones jabbering on...

Yeah it is shocking to me.. considering I've seen each series through chronologically from 3 to 5 times, and TOS probably a lot more than that. And then all the eps watched out of sequence.. and that there is over 700 eps all together.

I was just starting high school when the original series debuted. (Yeah, that long ago!)

I really did watch the first episode, with the salt-sucking monster. It seemed like standard space opera to me.

The other kids at school liked it a lot, swore that it was lots better than Lost in Space. That wasn't much of a recommendation to me, and I rarely tuned in all those years.

It wasn't until I saw the earlier Trek movies that I made it a point to revisit the shows.

My first impression of Trek was the 09' film when it came to theaters. Let's just say I wasn't very educated about Trek, so after leaving the theater I thought that Trek was just a bunch of stupid action schlock. I had no interest in revisiting the Trek universe until a video I saw online convinced me to give TNG a shot. Over a year after seeing the 09' film in theaters I decided, just for the fun of it, to rent TNG season 1 disc 1 from Netflix (you know, because I had nothing better to do :)). 15 minutes into the pilot episode I was completely hooked. I've been a Trek fan ever since!

I remember back in 1987 I was eight and me and some friends would be playing, then, all of a sudden, at seven on Sunday nights they had to go and watch "Star Trek: The Next Generation." So, I'd walk home, occasionally flipping it on, seeing what all the hubbub was about, thinking it looked boring as hell. In 1993, another couple of friends brought over "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," and having nothing else to do, we watched it. I liked Captain Kirk infinitely more than Captain Picard.

At that time, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was getting ready to start up, so I watched and taped it and fell in love with the characters (Major Kira, first). I then moved onto the original Star Trek and Voyager, watched Enterprise and am finally on season three of Next Gen (Picard and co. aren't as stuffy as I originally imagined, but it's cheesy as hell and the characters aren't as interesting, but I can appreciate it for what it is).

My first Star Trek movie I watched in theaters was Star Trek Generations opening weekend.

Well for me i remember when i first started watching star trek when it was the original series and i remember loving the ship i thought it was awsome, then TNG was released and remember seeing the Enterprise-D and i thought wow it was huge compared to the original ship and then i watched the series when i visited my grand parents.
