First Impressions of The Apple

They collect fruits and vegetables for the next time Vaal "signals" that he needs sustenance. I really don't think they would do anything unless told to by Vaal, that is what made the society so shocking to our heroes.

Insofar as to how well it worked for them, well that is debatable. If they lack the ability to think independantly, can they really know if something works for them or not. I just don't think they knew (or could know--and that is the point) anything else until their encounter with Kirk and the rest.

Which is where you can make the argument that they weren't protected by the Prime Directive as they are an arrested culture.

The arrested argument is something Kirk came up with, its not part of the Prime Directive, and it's highly debatable in every aspect. When even the episode writers/producers make an anology for our heroes with the devil, you KNOW something is WRONG.

Howzabout "a population in arrested development in perpetual servitude to a machine capable of, and perfectly willing to, pull a starship out of orbit, thus making it a hazard to interstellar navigation"?

The Prime Directive ends when you start yanking other peoples' ships out of space and smashing them on your planet.

Same argument applies to Eminiar VII and Landru's little house of horrors.

Proof?

The proof is in the dialogue...Kirk gives an explanation to Spock for his actions (of course since Spock is logical he knows Kirk is wrong:techman:). In most cases when quoting the "rule book" they would cite where the rule came from. There is no such citing here. This was Kirk's personal opinion...

RAMA

And as a starship captain, that far away from the command structure, his personal opinion is law.

Besides, Spock has never hesitated to point out when Kirk was wrong, especially when in private conversation. Why keep quiet now?

So your saying that Spock doesn't know the rulebook as well?

The Omega Glory said:
SPOCK: Regulations are quite harsh, but they're also quite clear, Captain. If you do not act, you will be considered equally guilty.

So either Spock is equally guilty on a number of occasions in regards to the Prime Directive (for not stopping Kirk's intervention) or the possibility exist that Kirk wasn't violating the regulation?
