Or, for the higher-quality, not-embeddable-on-the-BBS version, head over to Wired.

Any thoughts? I've been looking forwards to this for quite a while, and this trailer really has my curiosity piqued. I love the atmosphere and look of the trailer, and I hope the movie ends up with the same feel of mystery and awe.

Also, how bloody cool is it to see the Amblin and Bad Robot logos back-to-back to start the trailer? :techman:

Either Spielberg was looking over Abrams shoulder and making suggestions on every shot, or Abrams is really good at aping that old Spielberg style.

Looks like a combination of Signs and Monster with a hint of Cloverfield. I may or may not check it out.

Abrams has said before that this movie was a tribute to Speilberg so I'm not surprised that it looks like a Speilberg film. I've been interested in this film from the start so I'll be checking it out.

Looks awesome. Captures that early-80s, ET/Goonies feel perfectly.

Here's hoping Abrams manages to find a fresh angle on whatever strange alien/supernatural force is behind all this. Because by this point, I think we've seen every possible idea out there already.

It reminded me more of E.T.
Or, in other words, the kids and suburbia of E.T. with the family-imperiled by aliens of War of the Worlds?

I was out until I saw that Kyle "Early Edition" Chandler has a major role. Now it's looking like a Netflix.

I'm ambivalent. Both Abrams and Spielburg are fine, okay brilliant, filmmakers, but both are self-indulgent and are best when reined in by others. You know, kind of like Philip K. Dick.

For example I call it "Spielburging the ending" when a film's end lasts too long. See A.I. and War of the Worlds. Abrams gets too caught up in the meta-story and "psyching viewers out" that he often forgets to actually do something worthwhile. For instance the marketing for Cloverfield was far better than the actual picture.

Well to be fair, Cloverfield wasn't actually directed by Abrams. With his own films, I personally think he HAS delivered the goods.

And as far as "self-indulgent," I might put that label on a Spielberg or Peter Jackson, but Abrams' movies have always struck me as actually being very lean and economical in their storytelling (most obviously with MI3). Which nowadays I find to be pretty refreshing.

The first teaser, and the fact that Abrams' name was on it, had me very interested. The Super Bowl spot had me far less interested in seeing it. This trailer has now confirmed that I am definitely going. It looks interesting!

I have to say I'm surprised by the ambivalent reactions so far. This, to me, looks like it could feel like a very classic-Spielberg style SF film, in the vein of CEotTK or E.T. I guess I'm just alone in finding that quite exciting. :p

I think it looks very good. In a summer full of comic-book adaptations, sequels and remakes it looks like Super 8 will be a blast from the past.

I, for one, am excited.

However, based on the opening with the kids making a film, I am afraid that the "twist" of this movie will be that the whole thing is taking place in their imagination.

Hmm, it looks very promising...

But it is very much a "style over substance" trailer - (the style being 80s retro) - because there is very little revealed about the actual plot. Virtually nothing.

Never seen a JJ Abrams marketing campaign before, then? ;)

RoJo, I just don't get that "feel" from it, myself. I think it should just be read as it is—that's what gets these kids together, and near where the train crash happens.

As opposed to the adaptations, sequels and remakes that will be blasts from things yet to come? (Sorry, couldn't resist. :p)
