We had the poll for what most consider the best TOS movie vs Star Trek XI so I thought it would be interesting to see how what most consider the best TNG movie does against Star Trek XI in a poll. First Contact Vs. Star Trek XI who will win? Let the Voting Begin:

First Contact

And here are a few reasons:

Jerry Goldsmith, Patrick Stewart, Alfre Woodard, James Cromwell, Alice Krige, the freakin' Borg.

What I find surprising is how badly Star Trek XI is fairing in all these polls recently. A few months ago it felt like heresy to make any form of criticism of this movie, let alone argue it was mediocre compared to some of the other Trek movies (which the polls seem to indicate as the general opinion at the moment). At the time it was being supported so vehemently by what seemed to be the overwhelming majority that I am truly amazed at how quickly this has changed. :vulcan:

Perhaps Star Trek XI is widely considered to be the best TOS movie...

I have to say that I'm not among that "most" of which you speak.

First Contact is something like my third or fourth favourite picture.

It doesn't look that way. Not even close. Star Trek XI seems to be falling short in general opinion when compared to the other TOS movies. Being only prefered to The Final Frontier and The Search for Spock. I'm sure the BBS polls aren't very representative but I still find it surprising. Not that I'd wont to complain about this development ;).

The massive box office proves the popularity and frankly nobody can dispute the bean counters. My feeling on the film was "alternate histories equals totally different characters". Let them get on with it. See how far they travel before their backstory gets too intricate and have to start all over again for a whole new audience. I'll be right here, waiting, yearning for my Trek universe to return to the screen... just add it to the 4 years I've spent so far, constantly moaning about Enterprise's premature end.

I have to wonder if it had turned out more like Harve Bennett's 1990 proposal for honest-to-goodness prequel films, with younger versions of the TOS crew leading up to their being assigned to the Enterprise, would it have been so successful? I guess we'll never know for sure...

Hands down First Contact.

Why don't we start these polls for every Trek movie? TMP vs. ST09, TWOK vs. ST09, TSFS vs. ST09 and so forth. Would be interested in the results.

First Contact because of the first contact story. It's one of my favourite ST plotlines and I enjoy how it led to ST: Enterprise.

Star Trek XI is great, but it's a shame it wasn't ABOUT something (I understand and even enjoy it being a character piece exclusively, but I like ST to have a theme, and FC's first warp flight is one of the most interesting imo).

At yet their films make money. If I were human, I believe my response would be that people these days are idiots who can't handle a plot that requires thinking about and go without flashy special effects for more than 5 minutes.

...if I were human.

I am shocked by the outpour of support for "First Contact" in this thread. Shocked and delighted. Bless you guys. :adore: Usually it gets eviscerated in these threads comparing it with other movies as the 'nit-picking brigade' complains endlessly about 'character assissination' of Picard and the Borg, etc. I think it's perfect just as it is and the best Star Trek movie.

For the first half of "Star Trek" I was seriously starting to think it might overtake "First Contact" as my new favourite, until Spock explained what he and Nero were doing in the past, and the whole movie jumped the shark and I knew it wasn't going to end up anywhere near as good as my favourite. I still think it's better than most of the other Star Trek movies (other than 2 and 4), though.

Why thank you. I'm a doctor, not a...err...person who's willing to forgive all of XI's flaws, just because it's made its own bastardised version of Trek popular for a few months.

First Contact. Perhaps we're all a bit biased because we had seven seasons of TNG to get to the know and care about the characters.

Getting ready to piss off some, I think that Trek 09 actually works better as a stand alone film than First Contact does. FC depends on so much backstory from TNG, whereas those completely unfamiliar with Trek had an easier time accessing nuTrek. That said, I personally have a much more emotional attachement to FC, but I think Trek 09 works better as a complete story.
