Though I never cared for Firefly, I wish he, his parneter and their children the best. Beautiful
I had a feeling he was gay. I didn't know for a fact but I sense it from him when he was doing episodes of Firefly. Good for him to come out. It takes guts to do that and face the aftermath.
This is what the paranoid conspiracy theorist locked up inside me thinks.

Playboy Club sucks and he knows it.
This is him trying to get out.
Either to tank the show, or allow an exit to suddenly manifest.
However, it could backfire.
The producers could make his character gay and and suddenly there's a whole bunch of cable-like pg 13 boy on boy and the Playboy Club becomes a success.
Unless that's what he wanted, or what he was offered.
If the producers said...
"Dude, you're gay? You are gay. Do you want to play gay? You are going to play gay. It would help the show if you came out, add some realism. If you don't come out you're fired."
