Firefly is a prequel to Dune

Eventually, in the 23rd or 24th century, a Starfleet ship discovers the system, and the peoples of the Alliance learn that they are not alone in the universe, and that other life forms that aren't human also exist.

This would have to be the 26th century at the earliest, because the Firefly TV series takes place in 2517. (OK, OK, assuming they didn't modify the calendar somehow...)

Interesting, but with STL ships, how could they get to a remote part of the galaxy by the 24th century?

Well, if it really is part of the Star Trek universe, we know this kinda thing happens all the time there!

Dude, Adventure Time is a sequel to Dune, and the Ice King is really a ghola of Leto II!

And, IIRC, Earth of the Dune universe is uninhabitable because it was deliberately destroyed with atomic weapons. Firefly's Earth was abandoned, but not destroyed, because of environmental catastrophe.

So Interstellar is a prequel to Firefly?

Never seen that film, so I wouldn't know...but with some creative writing, pretty much anything can be a prequel TO anything.

The Butlerian Jihad wasn't Man vs Machine. It was Man Who Thinks Computers/AI is Good and Beneficial vs Man Who Thinks Computers/AI is Evil and Harmful. It was the latter group that won in the end, and convinced the rest of the people in the Imperium to adopt their viewpoint.

And I still don't see that happening Luddites don't exactly sound like people who can fight a war and win against guys with robotic soldiers. Besides in that case its a war between smart people and idiots who are going to doom humanity to extinction, with the idiots winning.

There weren't any robotic soldiers! The Butlerian Jihad was fought between humans with differing ideologies regarding computers/AI. To compensate for the absence of computers/AI, humans were forced to develop their mental skills and physical reflexes, which is how the Bene Gesserit, SwordMasters, and Mentats gained their skills. The Guild Navigators learned to use foldspace technology that didn't require computers.

The people of the Imperium didn't go back to the stone age. They developed alternate technologies and mental skills that didn't require computers or artificial intelligence.

Does this also mean that K.A.R.R. was built from Cylon technology obtained during Galactica 1980? I mean, you got the whizzing eyes and pissy anti-human attitudes, so it's gotta be true.

^ Then again, we don't know exactly where, cosmically speaking, Firefly is set, do we? It's been awhile, but I don't recall an exact location ever being specified. It could be anywhere. And "remote part of the galaxy" could be just a metaphor, or a bit of hyperbole.

Please don't try to tell me that on an Earth that was 100% controlled by Omnius, Erasmus, and the Titans, a bunch of religious authorities got together and rewrote the Bible to include proscriptions against computers and thinking machines.

There was no Omnius, Erasmus or anything like that in Frank's books. Those stories don't enter into consideration.

You can ignore those books if you like, but that won't make them go away.

 Since I happen to own a copy of every one of them (and have read all of them except the latest, Mentats of Dune), I guess it's evident that they're not going to "go away." But it's also evident to me that they're utter crap.

Kevin J. Anderson once asked me why I continued to read them, if I hate them so much. I told him I kept hoping they would improve.

Alas, they didn't. The only Dune stories I've seen that are worse than this stuff are the ones where there's incest going on between Leto and Ghanima.

If I'm in the mood for bad fanfic stories, I'll read nuDune. If I'm in the mood for the good quality, authentic Dune, I'll read what Frank Herbert wrote. The two cannot possibly be reconciled into one coherent narrative.

I read a Sherlock Holmes novel over the holidays where Sherlock with the help of a steam punk ripoff of Iron Man fought a giant transforming train - it was quite enjoyable but if I was discussing Sherlock I wouldn't bring it into the conversation. Those dune Sequels occupy the same sort of space.

Yeah, I don't think anyone is debating the existence of the newer Dune novels, only their relevance. Short version: they don't have any. ;)
