Find me a new mouse

I need a new mouse, mostly because after a while at work or at home, the tip of my index finger really starts hurting. It's because of the shape of the scroll button - the thin profile of the wheel combined with the fact that (usually) you have to push harder on that button than the left or right buttons in order for it to click.

I'm sure I could get through a day without clicking that middle scroll button, but it would be inefficient. Not only do I use that to open new tabs, but other programs make use of that button as well. Not to mention the scrolling action, which can also be jarring depending on the mouse.

So, back to my original point: I need a new mouse. I've looked around, and I can't seem to find a good one that has a nice soft and *wide* scroll wheel that wouldn't cause my finger any discomfort. Can anyone help?

Have you checked your mouse settings for smooth scrolling? That's not a check-box option for this new mouse on this computer (it just does it automatically) -- that would eliminate jarring scroll.

This wireless mouse, DYNEX (DX-PWLMSE) has a rubber-feeling wheel a bit over a quarter inch in width and the feel of pressing the wheel is middle ground, to me. Down side: runs on two triple A batteries, which can go out in a few days with persistant use.

I like the Saitek optical mice. A lot of designs I find a bit big and bulky, but these are just nice for me.

The scroll wheel is plenty wide enough, but it does need a bit more push than the buttons to depress it.

What I meant was the physical action of rolling the scroll wheel can be a bit jarring (depending on the mouse), not the screen action. But thanks for reminding me of that check box - I just got a new computer at work and I'm still trying to get everything set right.

How about a Logitech trackball rather than a mouse? It has a decent sized scrollwheel. In any case, I never use the middle button -- can you avoid it by reprogramming the functions?

I love it personally, but not knowing what mouse you've been using with which you are dissatisfied, it's difficult to recommend one that should fit better.

I use a logitech G5 for gaming, but like Iasius pictured as well as a Logitech MX revolution. I don't like a big mouse for most things but gaming is its own animal. If you can go to a store like Best Buy or Office Depot, you can hold various offerings and see what's confortable.

I'm a huge fan of the MX518 too. It's the best mouse I've ever had and unlike most high-end mice it doesn't have 8 million useless buttons and flashing lights that will blind you. It's just a really nice mouse that is built to last and amazing for gaming.

This is a Microsoft "basic optical mouse". I think that is has a very soft scroll wheel and it i wide enough not to hurt your finger.

Pretty much that. That's all I have for a mouse just a basic two-button mouse with a scroll wheel. The one I use is wireless which is a bit of a pain in the ass in hindsight now. I had assumed the mouse had a "sleep" function so that it wouldn't just sit there sucking energy 24/7 but apparently not so it goes through batteries. It's either that or I could constantly turn it on and off.

I wonder though if they make in balled-mice anymore? The optical ones are so awesome I sort-of doubt it.

Yes they do. The cheaper optical mice are in the £5-10 range. The cheapest ball mice are under £5, so they are still available as a budget option.

I have used optical mice for only 3 years, beginning in 2008. They do have three negative points:

- Opticals go to sleep, so they take a second to wake up when pushed. Ball mice do not.

- Ball mice have a nice friction with the desk and the spinning ball creates a nice inertia. This makes it easier to be quick and precise with them. Optical mice are basically just plastic boxes that are slid about with very poor tactile feedback.

- Optical are fussier about surfaces and don't always behave as they should. So sometimes with precise graphics editing, if pushed a little bit forward, the pointer will step one or two pixels in a different direction. So they're prone to error when it comes to small precision movements.

I don't really like glowing bits on my computer peripherals. Same reason why I've put a black piece of paper over my monitor's power button which also glows blue (and blinks when on standby).

I usually run my computer 24/7 and I've managed to keep it very quiet, but those lights annoy me a bit when trying to go to sleep, especially blinking ones. Same for when I just want to watch a TV show or something and there's this light nearby that keeps distracting me.
