Finally Watching Discovery - Was I Supoosed to Hate This?

Sorry I would disagree. I found they were dragging Trek through the mud with that.
Curious to know if you felt the same with Data's "Oh, shit" line in Generations.
I'm really struggling to grasp how people have problems with "fucking cool" and a single pair of Klingon boobs, and completely be fine with this amount of close-ups of gore and knifes cutting through people's flesh in agony.... Americans.
Hardly an American thing. This is a human thing, at least since the Roman Empire was a thing, were using a particular type of language could have one regarded as uncultured and unsophisticated, a barbarian. While violence was part of entertainment. Humanity as not changed as much as we would like to believe.

Americans
Damn straight.

Not all obscenities exist on the same level, fuck is getting up there. As for swearing being gone in the future, from what we've heard up to now it does seem to be pretty rare.

To get Kirk to let loose (hell, bastard) you pretty much have to kill a son or close girlfriend.

I hope you don't think all American think like this. I would much prefer seeing boobs instead of gratuitous violence. And as for "fucking cool"...I didn't have a problem with the cursing; I had a problem that it was just cursing for cursing's sake.

No, it was cursing to provide a cute character moment for Tilly and Stamets.

Sure, there were other words they could have used, but this had the benefit of being new and different for STAR TREK. So it was a win-win.

Also, Star Trek and swearing go way back. As tame as this seems today, this was shocking when it first aired...

Does it demean Star Trek less if the swearing is in a different language?

Tilly is a fourth-year cadet... so that probably makes her 21 or 22. A lot of people in their teens and early-20s curse just for cursing's sake. So, it's believable.

For me, the fuss has been because I find the show and its characters to be quite joyless and dour.

Hopefully season 2 picks up more.

Kor
I think it will pick up in season 2. Tig Nagaro, for example, was probably cast -- at least in part -- because of her comedic background. She has the comedic timing you'd expect from a stand-up comic.

Other than Tilly, I thought two other characters showed displayed a little humor in season 1 -- Lorca and Stamets. Lorca could often be very flippant; granted, he was also dour, as you said. Stamets was occasionally sarcastic and showed some signs of a sharp and biting wit.

Stamets was sometimes McCoy-like in that respect -- although they did not present that side of him often enough. I mean, the guy was in a catatonic state for a couple of episodes, making it difficult to display any real personality. But even when he was fully conscious, that "biting wit" aspect of Stamets went largely unexplored, and was only displayed in small flashes. But it was there.

I didn’t say it wasn’t believable. I said I had a problem with it. Mainly because it was jarring and annoying.

I actually feel that scene was more of a way to show Stamets' personality than Tilly's, or at least equally so.

Stamets agreeing with her (and he having no problem with her outburst) added some depth and humanity to his character who, up to that point, was a bit uptight and stuffy. I saw that scene as a bit of a coming out for his character.

We already knew that Tilly was prone to saying something like that (i.e., lacked a filter a Starfleet officer should have); that is, it wasn't that unexpected of Tilly. However, what we we didn't expect was Stamets being just as able to display natural human astonishment about "cool" things as Tilly could.

Same here. People curse all the day at random things in real life. Not sure why Staments echoing Tilly's comment is so jarring when real life is filled with it.
