finally saw Wall-E. the REAL star of the movie is...

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Ben Burtt. Man this guy is awesome. I overall of his insightful commentaries about sound on the SW DVD's are insightful, and when I heard that he was providing the sounds for this film, I couldn't think of a man more adept for the job.

As for the movie, I liked it. My favorite Pixar films. I never was a huge fan of their past works. I know I'm in the minority, but I found the heroes in other films to nbe overstated, neurotic and unpleasant in the fact they all seem to be different takes on the same character. I particularly hated the father in Finding Nemo. I mean all throughout the film he's had too much sugar and I have to hear "Nemo! Nemo!" or Flik's over-nervousness. I always like the characterisation of Gromit in the Aardman films better, intelligent, quiet subtle. Wall-Egot to that.

The story was ambitious and thoughtful, and deeper than most kids movies, but I almost wish that it was deeper. This is the perfect kind of story to examine themes of God andDeath, but it never goes that deep, but the canvas was there for those themes. Also the fat pampered humans with bone degradation seems to be an interesting idea, but what would REALLY happen to people who have been in space that long.

As much as love Burtt's design work in the film, I wondered if the film wouldn't have made effective use of nou sound in space, much like 2001, the film it played mostly as a homage to.

I still think Pixar is a bit overrated. In this story, the chaos and chases o0n the ship seemed excessive and were there just to have chases and escapes. All the extra robots in the film were a bit much were they good or bad?

I think that Pixar should continue to try and reinvent themselvss. I wish them luck

Watch Burn-E, normally when Pixar make a film they have a small film to go along with it, which are usually unfunny, but Burn-E almost made me piss my pants with laughter.

to each their own, but I didn't dig that short much. It seems that all Pixar shorts just repeat the same themes, and that's "Repetition" and "Impatience." I mean in many ways the humor in this short is exactly the same as the humor in Geri's Game

[the REAL star of the movie is...] Ben Burtt.

Well, yeah, that's more or less literally true, because Burtt is credited as the portrayer of the lead character. WALL-E's vocalizations are Burtt's own voice electronically modified and mixed with other sounds. So that makes him the star of the movie by definition.

Given that they had artificial gravity aboard the Axiom, being in space didn't really make a difference. They were really blurring the issues here. Bone and muscle loss in space occurs in the absence of gravity, because you don't need to exert yourself as much. The equivalent process happens in people who are bedridden for extended periods: they lose bone and muscle mass for the same reason, lack of use. In the movie, the humans' lack of bone and muscle development was really due to their perpetually sedentary lifestyle; since they had artificial gravity, it would've made no difference whether they were in space or not.

(Except it's a weird kind of artificial gravity that maintains a constant vector even when the ship changes orientation, so that tilting the ship sideways somehow causes everyone to slide toward one side of the ship. What would've really made everyone slide to port would be thrusting to starboard.)

How this movie didn't win the sound oscar is beyond me. What an incredible achievement in sound here. I think with the technical categories, the voters probably just go with whatever the golden boy movie is that year instead of actually looking at what the category is.

I had a chance to talk to Matthew Wood for a bit about WALL*E (he was one of the sound designers). Told him that it was shame that they didn't earn the Oscar because of the great, great work they did.

I saw this movie recently as well for the first time and I have to say it is EXCELLENT, I give it an A+ A very enjoyable movie!
