Finally moved into new locale....

Done.

Last weekend I finally got moved into a new locale in Brockville, Ontario where next week I begin my new position in the new Future Shop in town.

Previously I'd lived in Mississauga, Ontario since 1969 and I'd worked at the previous Future Shop location for nine and a half years. So a new position and a new community will be something of an adjustment after so long.

The upside with my move is that my new position comes with a bit more income in conjunction with my new residential situation having lower living expenses. I'm also hoping that my new situation will be more conducive to my non-work pursuits and interests. :)

Nothing exciting I'm afraid - local Canadian electronics retailer.

I hope you get settled in to your new place happily enough, Warped9. At least you haven't had to move too far!

And good luck with the new job :techman:

Future Shop is an electronics retail chain here in Canada similar to Best Buy in the States. Actually eight years ago Best Buy bought Future Shop and even plan to open FS stores south of the border as they maintain distinct identities in the two chains.

Best Buy is more of a grab-and-go type of store and with more of an American style (re: control freaks) to its management and operations while Future Shop is more customer service oriented with somewhat more of a relaxed style to its service and operations.

Although both chains are owned and operated by Best Buy the parent company still plays the two off each other to make consumers believe we're actually competitors.

Congrats on the new position, Warped9. Brockville, huh? I must admit, I had to look that one up on Google Maps -- damn, that's quite a ways east! Well, hope you enjoy your new digs and your new job.

Oh, and living in Mississauga myself, I'm curious: which Future Shop around here did you work at?

Yep. it was about a three and a half hour drive east on the 401.

I worked at the Dixie-Dundas FS. I was the senior guy in merchandising and shipping/receiving and in Brockville I'll be the Merch Lead, a new position.

Being a smaller community it's a more easy-going environment and I have family here.

I've even noticed some rather good looking women around town.

We used to have a Future Shop here in Tacoma, WA... I will never forget the big curved wall of old-fashioned TV's that they had there. I think the store closed sometime around the late 90's or so; it is now a Petsmart. As a matter of fact, I am surprised to hear that there are still stores carrying that name. Congratulations on your new position!

Heh, that one's just a few blocks from where I live. Actually, it's where I got the computer I'm using right now! Small world.

Well then, sounds like the whole thing was worth it. :D

I'd like to dispel something of a commonly held myth that city folks (like those around Toronto, the GTA and Mississauga) aren't as friendly as small town folks. I don't believe that's true, but that it takes somewhat longer to get to know city folks as they may tend to be a bit more wary around new people and often can seem to be in a hurry with little time to spare. Everything in people's lives seems scheduled to the minute. But once you get to know them they can be very open and friendly. It just seems to take longer.

Smaller community residents naturally see fewer new faces and don't seem to have the same wariness and heavily scheduled and rushed lifestyle. They're generally more at ease with others.

I'm looking forward to making some new friends with similar interests (while maintaining connections with previous friends) and, yes, hopefully have an opportunity to meet one or two appealing single women hopefully for some measure of companionship. I knew a lot of people in Mississauga, but at times I also found it lonely on a personal level.

Best Buy is more of a grab-and-go type of store and with more of an American style (re: control freaks)

Rather than take offense at this blanket insult against my fellow Americans, I'll simply take control of the situation and tell you to stop.

:D

I apologize as I didn't intend it as a blanket generalization against all Americans. But the management and organizational style of the Best Buy stores as opposed to Future Shop tends to be on the anal side regarding how everything is done. It gets crazy and annoying and can often actually be counterproductive.

I myself prefer the approach of telling me what you want then leave me the hell alone to do it. I hate it when busybodies are breathing down my neck and watching every little thing of how I do things. In the past I've often been praised for my initiative and being able to work with minimal supervision and direction so that they can focus on other things. And that's how I like it.

As such I will never want to work in a Best Buy store. They're like Wal-Mart lite (if there is such a thing).

I know you didn't mean it as an insult, I was only joking.
