Finally made it all the way through The Muse

its not THAT bad (when compared to Voy and TNG) but its bad for DS9. Thankfully, RA saved this show from the abyss.

I absolutely totally agree with all of your analysis in the OP.

You'd think any episode with Lwaxana Troi would be completely unwatchable, inherently obnoxious, pointless drivel (like "Fascination" is).

Yet RA, through his brilliant acting, uses his scenes to make something great, out of garbage, in "The Muse".

That's one of the things I love about DS9. Due to very strong acting & interesting characters all-around, often even bad episodes have some redeeming qualities to them. Even if the main plot scenes are completely unwatchable. Other examples of this that come to mind, are Aron Eisenberg saving "Heart of Stone" via his scenes trying to get the Sisko to vouch for him, and Jeffrey Combs saving "Meridian" via his lusting after a holo-Kira.

I haven't watched Meridian through, but I'm gonna based on what you said about JC.

The Muse isn't good but I think it's still well above the real DS9 stinkers such as Meridian, Let He Who Is Without Sin or Resurrection. A large part of that is definitely due to Rene Auberjonois.

I think it's as bad as any of those episodes. It's pretty awful all around except for some of the acting (RA).

Sure the Muse isn't a fan favorite... but it's not all bad either. Part of the charm of DS9 is it's multiple stages and ensemble casting to tell stories. Like a baseball team tired and weary of road traveling all it take's is 1 or 2 players to save the day...

...back to the Muse's story I liked the 1st half or so but the story of the wrap up just didn't come off...think I would have liked to see Jake get himself out of that jam. hummm I dunno just saying I liked the first part of the muses story then all of a sudden...meh!

The Muse isn't really that bad of an episode. Odo's story was pretty decent, and the A-story was more mediocre than bad. And I agree with anti-matter that it would be more interesting if Jake got himself out of the situation.

I think the Muse is an episode that is good to watch if you're high or something. It sure seemed like the writers were when this episode was done. It was that bad.
