Finally Getting in the Spirit of Christmas

For whatever reason I have had the damnest time trying to get into the Spirit of Christmas this year. In the past when December 1st hits I'm like a kid again and bouncing off the walls in anticipation. Not this year. I've barely listened to any Christmas music, the house I moved into last month is decorated quite nicely and we have a small tree in the living room that was put up two weeks ago but even that didn't have an affect on me. It wasn't until I heard the song "Christmas Wrapping" for the first time on my friends computer over this past weekend that I finally got into the spirit of things. It's my favourite Christmas song...and until I hear it I'm not into it. I haven't been listening to the radio a lot since I got my MP3 player so that's possible why I haven't heard i yet.

Has anyone else felt this way? Five days before Christmas and eight before my birthday is the longest time it's ever taken me to get into the spirit of things.

I feel work keeps the holiday spirit at bay unfortunately. I will show that work thingy who is boss when it comes to Santa.

Going to be a bit of a killjoy, but I never got this "spirit" thing: sure, I'm happy to see family and friends, and sure as hell I'm glad to take a break from work, but that's it. I don't hate it or anything, just not getting this "spirit of Christmas".

I am not in the Christmas spirit this year. I do when everything is going right...nothing is going right for me now. I just want it to be over.

It's been hard for me the last few years. Everyone has either died or moved away so our holidays are pretty quiet and lonely. I am starting to get excited now though, as my son will be driving up to be with us. w00t!

I get in the Christmas spirit right about Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, no one else I know cares about Christmas, so it can be pretty tough to be full of holiday spirit when no one else gives a damn.

However, next year I hope to have a kid in the house, so I can smother that poor child with all my Christmas silliness.

Last year I went all Festivus. This year, for some reason, I feel slightly giddy at the whole Christmas experience. I even sent a handful of cards... I never send cards.

The odd thing is, I feel more excited about my GF's presents than I do anything else, knowing I've got her something that will fill her with geeky joy.

This is what it's all about! :) (If the religious aspect isn't for you)...

That's really great! Can you tell us what you got her...or does she peek in here?

I'm trying my hardest to embrace the Christmas "spirit". I haven't been excited about the holidays for a few years now. It just doesn't have that magic anymore. Once you become an adult the holidays really take on a different perspective. Also, I've moved into my own place and live alone. My family isn't far away (a 25-30 min car ride) but the distance is felt. I think that, if I had my own family now, the magic might return.

This year I've put a little more effort into things. I have a wreath hanging above my fireplace (and I would have had a small tree, too, but the artificial one that my mother gave me was missing an important piece so it won't stand up in the base... oops). I've done my shopping a little earlier, and I've been wrapping presents earlier, too. I baked Christmas cookies and brought them into work for people to enjoy. I've been listening to Christmas music. I'm trying to enjoy the nearly 2' of snow on the ground.

It's marginally working.

We've both been busy working on re-building a friends SF forum... but I'm too afraid she'll come in the thread to say as she posts here on occasion. We tend to post on the same forums so I'm killing myself not being able to share this geeky secret!

Though... she'll likely post pics of it in the appropriate thread ;)

Yes! She does peek on here quite often :p Last year I had no presents and this year I have loads! Although I;m more excited about what I got for jamestyler :D

I felt a bit Christmassy last Thursday at our office Christmas lunch, a bit on Monday and yesterday while it was snowing, and a bit again earlier today. But largely this year has passed me by so far. I didn't put up a tree/decorations at home and didn't do cards/gifts for most people.

But tomorrow I intend having a light morning tidying up a few loose ends at ward round, then skive off early for a festive lunch with a friend & colleague before driving to my dad's place to stay with him until Sunday evening. So tomorrow, I expect to feel more festive. :D

PROMISE!!!! There shall be photographic evidence :D. His l;ast preent came this morning.......I may have giggled quite a bit!

I've been kinda bummed out by work this year, so the Christmas spirit didn't really hit me until today. Unfortunately, Christmas Eve is kinda late for all the things I wish I could do now. :p Fortunately I'm only in charge of cookies for tomorrow's dinner, and I think I can manage to finish gift prep tonight.
