Klaus, sounds like a good idea - could go either way, in the Trekverse, the 'real' world (assuming ours is real and Trek is our future!), or even in the history of the production of the TV show.

It's more due to accidental mapping. Especially in the front area of the ship, the black squares become thin stripes that show up alot in his designs.
