films with exaggerated acting

Independence Day
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
True Romance (think Oldman and dreads)
Seven Psychopaths
Pulp Fiction
Unbreakable (Jackson a fair amount, but honestly I think he deserved a supporting actor Oscar)
Any Star Wars movie with Palpitane in it
Some of The 10 Commandments (but not, for example, the always wonderful John Gielgud. But Vincent Price is practically twirling a mustache, and when Moses [Heston] or Joshua [John Derek, especially this guy] or anybody goes into religious reverie...eeps. Edward G Robinson is actually pretty subtle--he was a major acting talent--but has gotten a bum rap in the movie due pretty much to a Billy Crystal bit)

I would argue that as comedies, Back to the Future and Bedazzled are supposed to be overacted. It was an intentional part of their charm. There is a big difference between those movies and something like Star Trek.

I have to agree with this, otherwise I might nominate, say, The Big Lebowski for John Goodman. But he's supposed to be that way.

No, not over acted at all.

Pretty much any silent movie: see Metropolis, Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, etc.

I wouldn't call silent films overacted, relative to the medium. They had to have exaggerated facial expressions because they didn't have the luxury of using the tone of their voice to convey emotion. 'Words, words...we didn't need words...we had...FACES!'

There are some films that reference the silent movie era that are kind of intentionally overacted. Singin In The Rain, Sunset Blvd.

Jerry McGuire has a couple scenes of iconic overacting.

How is it Nicolas Cage has not been mentioned in this thread? Or Tom Cruise?

To this day, I'm convinced that he signed up for that movie thinking it was Lord of the Rings.
Isn't that sort of what Connery did re League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?

Here's one I wouldn't have thought of, but I was just watching it for the first time in about 20 years on TCM: Logan's Run. It's some of the Underground/Sanctuary conspirators in the city. When Jessica is sitting at a table with several, betraying Logan at the beginning, their conspiratorial eye movements and expressions are so exaggerated they made me chuckle, then again Doc just before he tries to kill Logan with his laser surgery thingie, same thing, and the terror on the female runner's face in Cathedral is just funny it's so over the top.

...but acting of that period was--by necessity--broad because of no sound. That, and many of the performers (and directors) were stage performers, so I give them a pass.
