Filming and Casting?

CaptainJack

Lieutenant Commander
I am wondering if people know when they are gonna be shooting the next Star Trek Movie and whether they are gonna be doing casting calls for extras and where?
/Thanks

According to trekmovie.com, filming starts in January. No clue about where, or casting calls yet. They're still scouting out potential locations while doing "soft prep" for the movie.

I'd guess for casting calls one would want to watch Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, some of the online sites which announce casting calls (I've even seen calls for extras posted on craigslist, though I suspect that probably won't be the case for this movie.) Anyone know what Paramount has done for previous Trek films?

I have been following the news about casting calls for extras for movies like TF3 and Batman:TDKR as well as Superman. But I was too late in finding out about them. I would just like to get the chance to be on a movie set and know that I was in the backround during a scene. That would be just fraking awesome.

Since they've done the effects for 10 out of the 11 films so far (the exception being Star Trek V), I'd say: "likely"

So if a person were to be picked to be an extra how does it exactly work? Do you tell them where and when you would be available and give them a headshot? Do you need an agent? Probably not for Extra work right?
Or might they say, "We would like you to come to California (probably where most of the movie would be shot) for say a week," and then you just have to buy your own ticket?

Filming usually lasts a maximum of three months for any big budget feature, during the end of the second month they've usually started editing and the third month is just left so they can reshoot scenes if necessary.

It really depends on what order the scenes are being filmed. It might be that they are filming on location and need a larger number of extras during the second month for a scene that occurs near the beginning of the film.

As for casting, I expect the casting has probably entered its first phase. They will be involved in gathering the actors from the first movie and setting dates for filming. I'd imagine the auditions for the big roles are an internal Hollywood affair and like the previous film will be sporadically announced between now and just before they begin filming the movie.

If they are announced at all. Look at Avengers: Halfway through filming and they haven't anounced anyone except the obvious and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill. No word on the villains or other actors.
But I hope JJ doesn't follow that route.

Obviously I know I have NO chance for a speaking role. But Im interested in being an extra anywhere and I dont care if Im just in a crowd somewhere in the back. But as with the new Batman Movie and Superman alot of people seem to have found out that they were having casting calls a few months ago. But I was too late. I was just hoping to not "Miss the boat" if there is even a chance.

Get an Agent.
I'm not so sure an agent is really necessary - that would probably be considered overkill for extra work. It does seem to me, however, that being resident in the area where filming is to take place (and thus able to respond to/show up at casting calls on short notice) would be a major advantage in scoring gigs as an extra.

If you live in LA, and are serious, join central casting. You gotta go there and sign up, in person, and it's like $20. It's probably better to be an extra for something else instead of just shooting for one specific project. Find out if you even like doing it.

Being an extra sucks. It's nothing like you think it is.

You don't need an agent to be an extra.

They didn't do the main visual effects work for Insurrection (that was Blue Sky/VIFX) or Nemesis (Digital Domain)

So when can one expect casting calls for extras? I want to be in a movie...

So where can I go to test for a role in the new film? Is there a site that deals with extras who will someday be discovered and turned into the next big thing?
