Try sending a simple message through an Internet translator a few times and it quickly ends up gibberish, as peculiar word choices make a hash of the original meaning.

Would the Universal Translator have the same problem?

I'm not a big fan of Enterprise, but they seemed to address this issue. Hoshi was trying to program the translator. Imperfect beings created the translator so there are bound to be imperfections.

Then there are the species for whom the UT does no good. The only one that comes to mind are the Tamarians, from the ep Darmok. -- RR
