Field hunters?

Yesterday I saw a car that said "Feldjäger/ field hunters" and out of it came three tall and grim looking soldiers.
I wondered and asked a friend: What do they want? Have you ever heard the term "field hunters", cause I haven´t.
She was astonished, I didn´t know who they were...hm... educational gap?
Anyway, those field hunter guys get send out to catch dissident soldiers or the boys, that should come in for military screening for seeing if they are fit for duty, but that didn´t show up when told.
I really never heard of them before and was quite astonished, that we have such a thing.
Does "field hunters" are common in other countries as well?

Everyone else calls them MP's (Military Police or Militärpolizei).

Which is pretty bizarre since German men have the right to refuse military conscription.

Don't know anything like them in Irish Republic & can't speak for Northern Ireland but right now in U.K they've a manhunt running that sounds like it could use Field Hunters (that's Raoul Moat).
