Im currently teaching my eldest to drive. One of the lessons I've burned into her head was the scenario where the dog/cat/blue whale runs out in the road in front of you. I have taught her to hit the dog/cat/blue what and not swerve. Swerving will very likely kill you. Now she is a tender sort. She loves animals. One of my nick names for her is 'St. Francis'. She aspires to be a large animal vet. So I understood that this would be a hard lesson to learn, but learn it she must. Then the other day a dog did run out in front of us while I was driving . My choices were A) hit the dog B) swerve left into on coming traffic C) swerve right into a ditch and stand of trees or D) brake in the hopes that I would stop before I hit the dog and enjoy someone ramming me from behind, pushing me over the dog. I chose A. We were both upset but we discussed it and the conditions around us and she understands. She said she would hate her self for making that decision but she would make it.

Actually, that's not ENTIRELY true. There are some animals (beyond the expected police / fire fighters' dogs, armed forces' new bomb-sniffers, & seeing eye dogs,) that are being tested for the ability to sniff out cancer cells & even detect epileptic seizures before they happen in some labs to be able to warn someone that some seriously uncool shit is about to happen to his/her owner.

Oh yes, excuse the fuck out of me for not including every single thing they contribute while I made my point that human life is still worth more than an animal's life.

Dogs do not deserve equal rights as humans. Humans are more intelligent, that is why that stupid dog ran out into the street.

If dogs do deserve equal rights as humans, then they should be just as intelligent. In this case, the dog offed himself.

If there was like a ladder or something in the road and you were in a big truck that could easily drive over it, you'd still probably swerve.

I saw a story on the news about a guy who swerved to avoid a deer and crashed into a tree instead. He was paralyzed and later died.

A few years ago Peta had gone out and put orange vests on deer so hunters would think they were other hunters and not shoot them. Just made the deer easier to see coming.

And then a few months later the top 3 people in the organization were leaving a protest and hit a deer on the freeway in a company car. You know what they did? They SUED the state of New York for not properly managing the deer herd! They claimed that their car was damaged cause there were too many deer! But they don't want anyone to kill them! What the F***?!?!? The height of hypocracy... [:@]

I think it was three years ago the president of Peta stated in a press conference that "for the good of the world as a whole" the human race should engineer a planed extinction of itself - global mass suicide of every human. We have quite a bit of wildlife around here and I've had to avoid that reflex myself. It's really difficult. Just recently the roads were bad and I was driving when a raccoon ran out in front of my car. I tried to brake but I knew it wouldn't be in time. I couldn't swerve because the road was icy, there was a car next to me, and trees on the other side. I did hit the animal and narrowly avoided getting into an accident myself.

It's not very comforting though, and I still feel awful about not doing more to prevent that. I felt physically ill afterwards.

When I was driving I mostly found myself reactivley slowing down for even birds on the road just becuase I didn't like the idea of running over them becuase of the mess it can make to both the car wheels and the road. Same with a dog or any other animal, hitting one could make quite a mess on the car and the road and if avoided properly can prevent making a mess by controlling how you avoid other vehicles and/or pedestrians. To me it's all in how you control your car.

so is it just people you don't know that you would choose pets over? it seems pretty hypocritical that you would choose a dog that you don't know over a human that you don't know, since in the OP the dog is completely random, yet you'll choose people that you do know over pets that you know

Most pets are better than most people IMO. I've never had a pet hurt me other than the pain of losing them when they died.
People on the other hand have hurt me. Emotionally and physically. So I tend to empathize more with pets.
I'm not some Peta nut who throws paint of people wearing fur. I just like companion animals more than most people. Likely due to having better experiences with Pets than people.
If that makes me come across as a nut or a hypocrite there's nothing I could say or do other than change who I am to fit your views. I'm pretty set in my ways. So I'm not changing to make anyone happy or to come across as 'normal'.
I'm sorry I told people to go F. themselves. I just didn't expect a bunch of people to attack me for my views. If a person has a different view than me I respect their right to that opinion.
Of course the whole thing is moot. I don't drive. (Some of you can breath easier now.)
I'm not a people person. Never really have been. I was a loner in school and am pretty much the same now. If it wasn't for the internet I would have a lot less interactions with other people.

^Actually, given the fact that people increasingly live in built-up environments, where their only contact with animals comes in the form of Disney movies and pets, I'm surprised that Kirk-Fu's attitude isn't more common.

Certainly, the worst pain I've ever suffered in life was inflicted by people, not animals.

No animal ever frustrated my ambitions, or crushed my dreams.

No animal ever laughed at me, humiliated me, belittled me, or treated me with contempt.

In fact, every animal I've ever known intimately treated me exactly as I treated them. When I gave them affection and loyalty, they gave me back affection and loyalty. When I gave them indifference or hostility, they gave me back indifference or hostility.

This is in marked contrast to many of the people I've known. Disloyalty and betrayal come naturally to many people, it seems.

So I think I can see where Kirk-Fu is coming from. But unlike many urban people, I've had a chance to spend some time in the country, and seen the way animals behave toward each other in wild and semi-wild conditions. They're not innocent at all. In many ways, they're as nasty to each other as we are.
