Ferenginar

PatB1974

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I was just thinking, if Ferenginar has near constant planet wide rain fall and Ferengi women can't wear clothes, why don't they all die of exposure? Shower thoughts.

^ Indeed.

In fact, Ferengi law forbids women to ever leave their houses.

(Which, incidentally, means that Quark has a hell of a nerve lecturing humans about slavery in "The Jem'Hadar". He says the Ferengi have never practiced slavery. Uh, HELLO?!? That's exactly what they do to their women, every day)

And the Jedi to their droids. Or Starfleet to their starships. I gather it's almost trivially simple to create a distinction between people and non-people and then go with that, and thus everybody does it.

To the credit of the Ferengi, and in a bit of a contradiction of the above, it appears they have never enslaved anybody who wouldn't be Ferengi. (Unless we accept debt as slavery, I guess.)

As for exposure, I take it the withholding of clothing is simply an effective and efficient means of enforcing the ban on leaving the house. Although perhaps it's mostly warm rain?

exactly: once you dehumanize (deferengize?) a group of people it’s really easy to take the high ground forgetting you are doing something worse.

Wouldn't evolution take into account the enviroment to a certain extent.

I think that Ferenginar's average temperature is probably high enough that there's little risk of dying of exposure. Where there's rain, temperatures are usually relatively moderate. If I had to guess, I'd say that Ferenginar has a thick atmosphere, and is located relatively far from its sun. Its temperature would be regulated by the greenhouse effect. A negligible axial tilt would ensure that seasons wouldn't be much an issue, either. Just one long rainy season.

I'd be more concerned about social upheaval... on Earth, it took the women's suffrage movement half a century just to get women the right to vote. Supposedly on Ferenginar, Zek signed a law that took women from chattel to apparent full equality practically overnight... don't you think there would be some level of pushback?

Why bother visiting Ferenginar in the first place ? For the food ? Certainly not for their women .....
I've heard though many students from the Starfleet opted to go there to learn about the New Rules of Acquisition ... the modified and added edition ... finished by Rom the new Grand Nagus :)

Ferengi women may not be attractive to humans, but maybe other races.

You would think such a capitalist society would at least have some more tourist friendly parts of the world where foreign women are not treated as inferiors because if they were, they lose out on all that revenue. But then again Ferengi have always been self defeating. Sanctifying betrayal and dishonestly even if it means losing all your repeat business.

It's also not clear what was going on beneath the surface on Ferenginar all those years. I have a hard time believing they became liberal capitalists over a course of a year. There may have been subcultures with widely varying treatment of women or the poor that just had to hide it and pretend to be greedy misogynist bastards to the likes of Brunt.

Whatever the Ferengi are, they are supposed to be the ultimate opportunists. Sure, there may be diehard believers in Rule X over Rule Y, but those lose in the end: the society at large quickly adapts to pretty much anything because that's what the Ferengi are built for. Or at least Quark always did...

Perhaps Quark doesn't perceive the Ferengi treatment of women as slavery because the women of Ferenginar haven't (to his knowledge) ever expressed significant opposition to how they were being treated?

It is, unfortunately, all too easy to say, "Hey, they're perfectly happy being treated this way!" and never give it another thought.

I guess the Ferengi race is unique .... I read a few things about them as I was watching DS9 (and I'm rewatching it right now)...
I'd say they are definitely a capitalist race, but due to their greedy and shifting nature they would betray even their business partners once they're caught with something....
I'd make a comparison and I'd say they are a race similar to the Hynerians from the Farscape space opera :)
They are somehow the same, greedy and ready to betray their friends for food or profit.
Don't know though if in real life such partnerships would last too long.... because once someone is betraying you, second time they won't make any deal with you since they proved to be untrustworthy :)
I guess Ferengi women can attract certain kind of men lol :)
Perhaps a Talaxian or a Vidiian (infected with the Phage ) would consider inviting a Fernegi woman to dinner if not for their attractiveness, maybe for their healthy organs lol :)
I always thought the one who invented the Ferengi in the Star Trek universe thought about those old Jewish traders who were great merchants but sometimes greedy and cheap ....
I don't want to be misunderstood I'm not saying this out of disrespect or racism (because I respect them - being great business dealers ) but they are known for their business skills, contacts, greedy nature and because they were stingy.
And yes they are indeed misogynists but I guess any hot alien female touching their lobes would change their opinion into their own favor since they always proved to be weak in front of any attractive woman from the Galaxy :)
They are pretty easy to predict unless you are just a naive alien to fall into their cheap trap :)

they were supposed to be “us”...Modern day American Yankees anyway
