female Starfleet captain/officer questions

jefferiestubes8

Commodore
Commodore
ST: First Contact (1996)
After Admiral Hayes gives Picard the news of the Borg crossing into Federation space then Picard has the bridge communications tuned to a certain Starfleet Frequency on the radio during the battle with the Borg and we hear the sounds of female captains giving orders.

ST: Voyager (1995- 2001)
This is the first Star Trek series to feature a female captain in the main cast.

On Enterprise set in the 22nd century T'Pol as science officer on NX-01 was given the Bridge a number of times. "Regeneration" was such an episode.

Two questions:
1. Were the sounds of female captains giving orders on the radio in ST:First Contact a nod to Voyager since it was made during season 1 of Voyager?

2. When were the first female Federation Starfleet officers and captain according to canon?

Why would the female voices in First Contact be a nod to Voyager? First Contact came two years after Voyager season 1. I never realy thought anything about it and took it as just typical Comms chatter. For all we know the female voices could've been XO's or Comms officers.

As for the first female Captain to be seen canocially, that would've been the Captain seen in ST4 then I think the second one would've been the Captain seen in TNG's Conspiracy, aired two years later.

Going chronologically of course then the Captain of the NX-02 in Enterprise is the first female Captain.

Why would the female voices in First Contact be a nod to Voyager?

as I originally wrote:
a nod to Voyager since it was made during season 1 of Voyager?
First Contact being in development since February 1995 and Voyager first aired a month before the development on First Contact started.

Hey guys thanks for the official canon answer on first female Starfleet captain.
Trek timeline 2154:
Captain Erika Hernandez was the commanding officer of the Earth Starfleet's second warp five starship, the NX-02 Columbia.

production date: 1986
Trek timeline = 2286
Madge Sinclair's character as the captain of the Saratoga was the first female Starfleet captain shown in Star Trek.
The Saratoga is notable in Star Trek history as it was the first ship to appear on screen with a female captain. That captain was played by Madge Sinclair.

production date: 1993
She later played Captain Silva La Forge in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Interface" First aired: 4 October 1993.

from memory alpha after your help.

^Though of course, Hernandez was Earth Starfleet, not Federation Starfleet.

Turnabout Intruder not withstanding, I can't believe the Federation made it's COs a boys only club. So whilst the female Captain in TVH was the first one we, the audience, actually saw, there must surely have been female captains before then.

Please could anyone help with this one?
I'm looking for canon but hey if novels, video games, or comic books had a female Captain please speak up.

Wasn't Geordi's mum the captain of the USS Hera?

Commander Dax took a captain's role on the Defiant during the Dominion War.

There was a female captain on DS9 in "The Sound of Her Voice", I think that's a 4th or 5th season episode.

There was the female Captain in TNGs "Measure of a Man", though she was a JAG officer and not a star ship commander

2. When were the first female Federation Starfleet officers and captain according to canon?

Well if we assume that the various organisations such as Earth Starfleet, Andorian Defence Force and so on were conglomerated in to the Federation Star Fleet, then there would have been female officers right from the beginning.

So Hoshi Sato, for example, would have been an Earth Starfleet officer right up until the moment the Federation Starfleet was formed. After that point, she is a Federation officer.

If we assume that the provisions for this were already present in the Articles Of The Federation, that would be 12 August 2161.

If there were any female captains at the time they would probably be captains in the new organisation. As far as I know there has been no canon reference to who she, or they, might be. If she was still in command of a vessel at the time, Erika Hernandez is a logical choice.

Cusak was later given command of the USS Olympia. The ship left the Federation in 2363 on a mission to explore the Beta Quadrant. In 2371, when the ship was returning home, they discovered a planet surrounded by an energy barrier in the Rutharian sector. When the Olympia scanned the planet, the ship was hit by a surge of metreon radiation which disabled its engines and caused the ship to crash. Cusak was the only survivor.
Her attempt to send a distress call was received by the USS Defiant.

USS Olympia was a Federation starship sent on an eight year exploratory mission to the Beta Quadrant in 2363

Thanks The Badger!

That was quite a long mission she was on!
Still surprised she did not say she was the captain...

1. FC was made during Season Two of VOY and released during Season Three.

2. What makes you think that the fact that a female officer issues orders is a nod to anything in particular?

2. When were the first female Federation Starfleet officers and captain according to canon?

We no more know the first female Federation Starfleet officer or captain than we do the first male. Presumably, Starfleet has always been nondiscriminatory and offered equal opportunities to all sexes. (I say "all" rather than both because you never know how many sexes an alien species might have!)

What makes you think that the fact that a female officer issues orders is a nod to anything in particular?

This. Starfleet DOES have female starship captains, female admirals, female commanders, etc. etc. Just because the main cahracters of DS9 and TNG don't represent command division women as main characters doesn't mean they're rare or unusual, or more noteworthy than a man in those positions in the 24th century. I never thought anything of it.

2. What makes you think that the fact that a female officer issues orders is a nod to anything in particular?

It is too bad on TNGs "Measure of a Man" Captain Lisa Cusick did not identify herself as a Starfleet captain.

Finn mentioned STIV:TVH and
The Saratoga is notable in Star Trek history as it was the first ship to appear on screen with a female captain.

As I originally wrote that we heard female officers (most likely captains) over the Starfleet Frequency during the battle with the Borg and that the Trek TV show on the air was ST:Voyager that had a female captain and it seemed normal. We may have heard the audio but not actually saw another female captain until 1993 on TNG "Interface" .

My thread is not about discrimination of sex or alien race but about how many female captains we have seen or heard in canon. I was also curious even about non-canon Trek showing this such as comic books, novels, and videogames.

1. Were the sounds of female captains giving orders on the radio in ST:First Contact a nod to Voyager since it was made during season 1 of Voyager?

By the time First Contact was made, there had been plenty of female captains seen and referanced other than Janeway. Therefore that was no referance. After all, that's like saying having a black guy do the voice of one of the captains heard during the radio chatter is a nod to DS9.

2. When were the first female Federation Starfleet officers and captain according to canon?

As others have said, the first female captain seen in production order is the captain of the Saratoga in Trek IV. The first captain chronologically would be Captain Hernandez in Enterprise, though prior to her we did see female admirals on Enterprise, though only as background extras.

Captain Lisa Cusick did not identify herself as a Starfleet captain.

Her corpse was wearing a Starfleet uniform with four pips. How much more proof do you need?

We may have heard the audio but not actually saw another female captain until 1993 on TNG "Interface" .

What about Captain Rachel Garrett of the Enterprise C in Yesterday's Enterprise? Or the captain of the other Starfleet ship in Night Terrors?
