Female Number One in ST XI

Stardate

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I have already commit on this before in other posts, but i find is strange that only ONE woman has been cast in Star Trek XI movie. So much for woman equality in Star Trek TOS.
This brings me to my subject, that prominence of a woman as high ranking officer among the crew of a starship was one of the reasons that the original Star Trek pilot ,,the Cage,, was rejected by NBC,who felt that the alien Spock and female Number One would be rejected by audiences, according to Roddenberry. So Roddenberry compromised by eliminating female Number One played by Majel Barrett and kept Spock for the second pilot..
However i feel its time in 2007 to correct this injustice by reinstate female character as Number One in Star Trek XI. Spock can be science officer instead. ;)

Yes I agree. Bring back Number One! And for god's sake, give her a real name.

it would be a good reference to "the cage" and I think it could be a good thing, as long as the movie doesn't become Kirk & her, like the last Bond movie.

This is the inherent issue with bringing in the character imho - unless she is seen as being Pike's actual XO in the film (which wouldn't surprise me, ill grant, given the potential time frame) - it will be hard for the script writers to acknowledge who the character is, if she's known by a normal name. Unless we get a really cheesy Archer type line with a big nudge-nudge wink-wink reference to the number '1' referring to her, such as her being on the academy basketball team and being player 1 or something equally pointless.

If there's a way for her to be in the film without needing lengthy introduction and not being there just for the sake of it, I'm all for it. But don't shoe-horn her in where she has no real business being.

I also think that so much of her character ended up in Spock that having her on screen basically acting Vulcan would take away from some of his cache.

We've still got Scarlett Johansson as Nurse Chapel and Hayden Panettiere as Janice Rand to be announced...

How about Nancy Hower? (Ensign Wildman from VOY) She'd have to use a wig (Nancy's a blonde, and Number One had black hair AFAIK) but I think she could make it work.

Of course it helps that I have had a mad crush on her from the get-go.

And I don't see how Number One couldn't have a real name in the film. We all know that 'Number One' is a common nickname that captains give to their XOs. Picard obviously used that phrase for Riker; no reason Pike couldn't be doing the same for his exec.

Yes on including Number One as Pike's XO, a big fat no on sticking a female XO into Kirk's traditional crew and taking the job from Spock.

How about Joan Cusak?

Roddenberry had Picard explain that HE called Riker "Number One" based on a long-time naval tradition for the first officer of a ship.

I don't know how true that is, but he clearly wanted the "Number One" designation for first officer enough to "make it so" in the sequel series.

Based on that, I'd suggest that Pike's "Number One" most definitely has a "real name", we just never heard Chris SAY it aloud in The Cage.

I could see Joan Cusak in the Q Continuum. :D
Yeah, she'd be good as a Q... but I'm serious... did you ever see her in Grosse Point Blank? I think she'd make a fine Number One.
