I put the lid back on the litter box to see how the cat would respond. He puts his front half through the lid hole and starts digging for like 30 straight seconds. Then he takes a poop, with his back half still out on the lid. I have no idea what he's thinking.
Pick him up, put him in the litter box and put your hand up, to keep him inside for a few seconds. If you can reach in and grab one paw and make him dig in the sand a few times, maybe he will get the message. Maybe. We took the whole litter box, which has a half-lid (covers the back half of the box) and put it in a big plastic storage bin, and cut a whole on the front of the bin and par of the lid. It keeps Junior from peeing over the box and keeps the litter from being kicked everywhere.
