Feline Follies

I've been using flushable kitty litter because, well, its main marketing point is that you can flush it. Then I read that it's bad to flush cat poop. But there are flushable bags for dog poop, so dog poop is okay to flush? What's the scoop, no pun intended.

Cat feces can contain Toxoplasma gondii, nasty parasites that can cause all sorts of health problems in susceptible humans — pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems — as well as in marine life. Wastewater treatment does not remove the parasite and so it can get into the water supply.

The biggest danger is from cats that spend at least a part of their time outdoors. Indoor only cats are less likely to carry the parasite, but it’s best to err on the side of caution. Cat waste and litter should be bagged and thrown in the garbage.
