Federation Reference Series Online HACKED

I guess they use Islamic text because it is 'hardcore', 'l33t', 'pr0', or whatever the current term for that is.

A lot of site hackers use arabic for whatever reason. The folks who took mine down twice the other year - different group - did also.

Don't know whether this topic would still be of interest, but Siteadvisor has gotten back with the results of their testing. I had contacted them because I was concerned that if virangar had been hacking other sites it might not be safe to visit them, but so far they've given it a green rating.

I wish I understood either the motive or mechanisms for doing what the hacker did. Perhaps it was someone that was parading as this site's owner. Who knows?

I do know that the hacking seemed to put the site provider in a less-beneficent mood. And that getting a new version of the site together has proven more time consuming, and less of a priority than I had hoped.

Something else I've wondered about. I noticed Federation Reference used to have posts by James Dixon, but he seemed to have dropped out of sight there just as he did from Trek BBS. Does anyone know what became of him?

aridas, you're always welcome to set up shop on my domain.

Thank you, Dennis. You have been very kind in offering that to me. My focus has been on organizing a way to present the material -- it really is amenable to a "gallery" layout of sorts, and any BBS would be at best peripheral to that effort. The site I was designing didn't even have one, in fact. It relied on a blog design that allows posters to reply online.

I've come to realize the people that came to the FRS site really enjoyed the BBS, but I wonder if that was because there wasn't a formal layout of the art. It was all to be found willy-nilly in the various posts.

In any event, the gallery is the first priority, and organizing that has been an on-again, off-again chore for a few months. Then I will put together the blog page, and then, if folks still miss the BBS, perhaps I can set up something to that effect at your domain.

There's not much that people seem to like better than expressing an opinion. IMAO. ;)

I've emailed him several times over the last year, but he hasn't deigned to reply. Or, he didn't get the emails. I really don't know which.

I must be honest -- James has always been a staunch fan of the SFPO and Mastercom works as being among the very best fan offerings, and for that I'm appreciative. However, as he and others have found out, the quality of that work was very dependent upon the independent stance taken by those of us involved in its creation. We paid homage to the bits and pieces of other fan works we thought worked with our vision, and tried not to contradict the rest. These new online works are different -- they are offered free of charge, and they are meant to fill in the gaps of the printed works. By definition then, they will cover the ground where we were trying not to publicly contradict the work of others. Doing so now hasn't set well with James, among others.

If I was going to have to cover a $20,000 printing and distribution bill, I would be very worried. But as it is, I just see this as an opportunity to broaden a few horizons. ;)

FRS seems like a fanon site, and if a similar one can be put up you could put references to it at the Star Trek Expanded Universe. It's a wiki that's to fan fiction and fanon what Memory Alpha is to canon and Memory Beta is to licensed works. I've already created pages there for some of my online stories.
