Federation-Klingon Mixed Crew?

Mysterion

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Would a mixed crew of klingons and the usual assortment of federation type folks work? Say 75% feddies, 25% klingons? Would there be too much cultural conflict for this to work well?

Saw a fanproduced tech manual (USS Khai Tam Technical Orientation Manual) that suggested a ship like this.

Given that the Federation and the Klingons can almost be considered friends during the Dominion War (and probably after, though you never really find out in Nemesis), I'd say it's possible.

I can't remember if it's Section 31 or Admiral Ross that says the Empire will take a long time to rebuild, and Chancellor Martok is expected to take what's left of the Empire in a new direction. I think it's quite possible that there might be a couple of experimental crews.

Daniels hints in Enterprise that the Klingons have joined the Federation by the time of Enterprise-J, so trialling mixed crews might be the start of their entry into the Federation.

There'll probably be conflict at first, but I think the Empire would be led into a less battle-thirsty era by Martok, so eventually conflicts would die off.

We do have an example of a mixed crew, at least for a while. In the Voyager episode "Phophecy" they do take on about 200 Klingons to Voyager. You never really find out how long they were on Voyager, however, there was a attempt at taking over the ship at the end, but it was just a few of the Klingons behind the attempt. All in all the arrangement did seem to go well. Espically for Neelix :)

Resistance is Futile

i could see it working. not all Klingons are the same, there's bound to be some Klingon doctors who could serve with the Feddies, or Klingon scientists...

Not every Klingon is a warnog-swilling, opera-singing, Bat'leth-waving honour-crazed beserker...

I think a Fed and Klingon mixed crew would work. In the Federation there must be member races who are similar to the Klingons in disposition, outlook, and cultural values. Humans are pretty similar in a lot of respects. When we think of Klingons we think of the guys we see out in space, making mahem and talking about honour. There must be other folks on the planet who are the people who build the cities, govern the planet, keep the lights on and the children educated. I think it would just be a case of mixing and matching the right people to crew the right ships.

Wouldnt work. no matter how close the federation and klingon empire are politically, it doesnt take away fromt hat fact that most klingons are by nature an aggressive warrior race. not all klingons are like worf and Martok, and most of them wouldn't willingly follow federation/starfleet rules. it is honorable for a klingon to die in battle, where as its an avoid at all cost rule in the federation.

Mind you, it would ,ake the klingons very good for away missions, and as ground troops. but klingons... explorers... not likely

I remember when I first heard about the VOY Season 7 episode "Prophecy" I had hoped the Klingons who came aboard Voyager would have stayed around for the rest of the series. That would have been interesting and shook the show up a bit.

But it was Voyager. So alas...

I think the question isn't so much, "Would the dynamics of the crew function?" as, "To whom would the ship answer?"

Would this be a Federation starship, receiving its orders from and answerable to the Federation Starfleet? Or would it be a Klingon starship, loyal to the Klingon Defense Force? Would its crew's commander-in-chief be the President of the United Federation of Planets or the Chancellor of the High Council of the Klingon Empire?
