Federation Cutter

On the idea that there might be a Federation Cutter Service for search and rescue, sub space buoy tending, law enforcement, etc I starting working on some ideas for Federation cutters. Here is a variation on an existing ship type, but one that is in service with the FCS. Maybe it's a buoy tender. Not sure yet.

As you can see, a striped pattern similar to the Coast Guards of many nations is used for ships of the Cutter Service.

This is a good start, being an experience sketchuper I can give you some tips if you'd like, and may I ask what version you are using, and what OS you have, if it's windows 7 or earlier Sketchup 8 is the best choice.

Thanks! Yes, I watch videos, but all tips are greatly appreciated. I have a second hand Windows 7 laptop and on it is Sketchup 2015.

lol don't mind the proturding typo, lol supposed to be protruding.. hahaha

I'll try that. Up to now, the next step with nacelles was either using the Follow Me tool to create a half sphere directly on the surface of the nacelle front end, which I almost never get right, or I would import a sphere and then sink it into the front tip of the nacelle once I had resized the sphere to fit.

The end result of that is not completely satisfying, but up till now I thought it was at least passable. I would like to get them done better though.

Sorry for the crappy video quality, and my rambling, I'm very new to making video tutorials, this is my first one.. lol

Tarek, I don't know if it was intentional, but this ship looks modular in that they could quickly swap out the center section to change the mission profile of the ship. That way they don't have specialty ships sitting around doing nothing, or worse yet going out on missions they can't do. Let's say they don't need buoy tenders or prisoner transports very often. Rather than build two more ships that sit at Star Base with a skeleton crew for months on end, they just put a bunch of center-modules in storage. when they have a mission for them, they simply bring in a random ship from patrol duty and spend a couple hours swapping out the module, and then swap them back after the job's done.

That's exactly what I had in mind, Sgt_G. This design is heavily influenced by the Antares type of ship. It was it's modular design that I liked.

We have a forward crew/command module, a rear engineering module and in-between I picture 1-3 mission modules that would cover the widest range of survey, tending, supply, patrol, research, and transport missions.

Can you make one from the beginning? From where you first create the shape, and then draw on it. I havent used the drawing tools much. It would be nice to see the whole process. Thanks!!

Soran, Ditto what Tarek said. In fact, I wouldn't mind if you opened a new topic for all the How-To videos for Sketch-Up. Not just yours, but for anyone to post in.

I had Sketch-Up on my hard drive from when someone sent me a file back in 2008 or so. I played with the program for about an hour and gave up. I installed the new version just a few days ago.

After about four days, here's what I have to show for it:

You probably could have done this in four hours instead of days. I used your warp nacelle video to do the sensor dish. Took me four or five tries, but I got it done. Thanks!

That's not a bad start! I like the basic shape, it has a lot of potential, and I will actually start a new thread! :)

Thanks, but I can't take full credit for the design. It's the Armed Priority Transport from Star Fleet Battles. See the miniature here: http://www.starfleetgames.com/Starline%202425.shtml (scroll down nine rows of photos). Why they call it an _Armed_ transport is beyond me, as it has only one single defensive Phaser Type-Three. But as I'm drafting the internal deck plans (in a different program), I figured I'd give SketchUp a whirl.

(Sorry, I'll see myself out.)

SPCTRE: Your image link didn't work right (at least on my screen), but I used "view source code" to find what it: a pizza cutter with handles in the form of the Enterprise. Cute. Real cute.

TAREK: I look forward to more of your work.
