Federation-Class Dreadnought Refit (No, not a TMP one)

Hey guys. New model:

This is a Star Fleet Universe ship. It's a (badly needed) upgrade for the Federation-class dreadnought that was instituted around the time of the General War.

When the Federation-class was designed, it was the first true dreadnought of its time. As such, Star Fleet engineers didn't have any opponents to gauge it against, and when the other empires began fielding their own superior dreadnoughts, the Federation-class proved sorely lacking. Minor incremental upgrades were applied over the years, but none of them solved the fundamental problems of the design. Finally, with war looming on the horizon, Star Fleet buckled down and designed an extensive refit for the class that would bring it on par with other ships in its size class.

The rear hull was lengthened, giving it room for extra power and support systems. Two more photon torpedo launchers and many more phasers were added. Extra missile racks were added to the interconnecting dorsal. Also, the warp engine supports were reconfigured and strengthened to make the ship more maneuverable than a bathtub(which it originally was not).

Anyway, this is something for my next ADB cover. I'll post updates as they come. Comments welcome. :)

Fairly slick... is this a "new build modification" or is this something that you (and Amarillo) see as being implemented just for new-build ships?

I actually kind of like the modifications overall. My only suggestion would be to give her aft-firing neck-torpedo-tubes (or are you referring to those as the "missile racks?") and thus give a parallel to the "fanon" Federation(r) design.

Existing Dreadnoughts were refitted to this configuration. This was a time-consuming and costly operation, and Star Fleet was loathe to take their big ships out of action for so long. But it was needed badly. New ones were also built to these specs.

Yeah, the weapons in the neck are two missile racks.

Thanks guys!

Ghost Rider: Yeah, it's the DNG.

Professor Moriarty: The "G" descriptor in Star Fleet terms basically means the ship packs additional drones. I assume the "G" stands for "guided weapons", but I'm not positive. Unlike the Kzinti, who focus their strategy around drones, Star Fleet tends to view them as a nice tertiary weapon that can add more firepower to a ship without increasing the amount of power it must spend. As such, Star Fleet ships with a lot of drones are special and tend to have this pointed out in their designation, like "DNG". (That's probably way more information than you wanted :p)

Ya know, I really like the inside-lighting around the hangar... but do you think that would be lit all the time, or just during landing/launching operations?

I much prefer the design of FJ's dreadnought over that of this ship, but your model looks very cool. :)

Icy_Penguigo...

I've been meaning to ask this (for another project for Mister Cole) but constantly forgetting. Can you throw up an orthographic set for this ship?

Even though I'm not a fan of tri-nacelled Federation dreadnoughts and other assorted battleships, I'm an thoroughly impressed with your artwork, Icy.

The color and lighting of your CGI models looks so much like TOS, it's like watching them on TV.

I'd really like to see a non-battleship derivative of this design, with no third nacelle, no saucer, and hangar bays for the front and the rear. Maybe there could be "conning fins" like the neck jutting out of the topside and keel, amidships. It would look (a little) like a TOS-era version of your NX-01 re-imagining. It could be a carrier-type vessel or an armored medium transport. With just an aft hangar and a smaller habitat hull, it could be a heavy starscout.

Cary L. Brown: Realistically it would probably only be lit during launching/landing operations, but for the sake of dramatic images I will probably just have it lit all the time.

Everyone else: Thanks all!

Mr. Vance: I'm just curious, you mentioned a project for SVC. Do you by chance have any involvement with Leanna's Fighting Starships? Also, here you go:

You know, I don't know. SVC was supposed to get back to me MONTHS ago about it, but never did, and there isn't any discussion on the forums.

Though, if PM me or email me (vanguard@pixelsagas.com), because I've got an idea to get some things moving in that regard... but I need your help.
