February Art Challenge - TheMacMan

Captain Intrepid

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I decided to take a slightly different tack on this challenge.

Ever seen a cartoon where a character goes straight through a wall, leaving an exact outline of their body? Well, a couple of fighters are chasing the Enterprise in a mountain range, only to discover that she's made of a lot more durable stuff than they are. I'm thinking of adding a caption to that effect, perhaps something like...

It was only then that USAF Captain Ron Smith realized following a UFO directly into a mountainside might not have been the best idea he'd ever had.

oh I get it, the ent is far away and you can see it through the nacelle impression, I think it's seeing just half the hole created by the saucer section and a quarter of the star drive section that doesn't immediately lend itself to the illusion. I couldn't tell what I was seeing until it was explained.

I like it, but you might want to show more of the "hole" so it's immediately evident it's an outline of the enterprise. It's cool though, very Sergio Aragonés.

I was thinking of doing that, but then the actual enterprise herself would have to be tiny, as would the two fighter jets. And is it sad that I had to look up Sergio Aragonés? :P

A little, but we still like you! ;)

I think a lot of people are a lot more familiar with Sergio's art then they are with his name necessarily.

OH! I get it now.

I think it would help if we weren't looking straight down at the Enterprise, or if part of the ship was actually hidden behind the rocks. As it is, the "outline" of the ship looks like a river and the Enterprise appears to be flying over it. It's just very unclear where the Enterprise actually is.

I agree with RoJoHen. Another way of doing it that would convey the idea better while maintaining the entirety of the Enterprise would be to show the entire silhouette of the Enterprise as it passed through the rock... I didn't realize that it was a hole until I read the forums.

Hey great idea, I like it! I think the only visually that strikes me as "wrong", and that may be throwing the effect off, is the detailing of the rock in the outline of the ship....take it out and just leave the cracks perhaps? And perhaps overlap the rock on the distant ship a bit, will give it some dimension...

Well, here's my final entry. Didn't have the time to rework the drawing, so I settled by captioning it. Hopefully that makes it more clear.
