Well, I might as well spill. Note this is rough, and I'm thinking of revising it a bit to actually involve transwarp drive. The warp core is patterned mostly after the TNG/
Enterprise-D core.
He's called
Transwarp. His real name is Ensign Nick Locarno (the disgraced Starfleet cadet from TNG's 'The First Duty' who was the template for Tom Paris.) He managed to avoid being jailed for his shenanigans, and eventually graduated from Starfleet Academy thanks for family influences, but carries a huge sense of guilt and chip on his shoulder. He always desired to be a top-notch flight controller aboard a
Galaxy class starship, but is relegated to rather mundane recon missions as a scout. He pilots a craft of the same class as Data's scout from 'Insurrection.'
Locarno was sent on a scout mission to a pre-first contact world, where he discovered Orion pirates threatening the planet. Locarno tries to stop them, but is forced to make a crash landing on the planet. Locarno receives a huge dose of warp radiation poisoning, which doesn't kill him but rather makes him glow blue. Stranded for a while, and somewhat injured, he discovers that the energy he's emitting can be channeled through the shard of a dilithium crystal from his shuttle's warp core, allowing him to shape the energy to his mind's will. He fits the crystal into his Academy ring, and uses it to begin clearing the debris of his ship and send a distress call.
He ends up having to use his newfound powers to fight off the Orion pirates to protect the locals, and is seen by the humanoid locals (who are at a roughly 20th century Earth level) who believe him to be some kind of superhero. After being rescued by Starfleet, it's decided that the best way to contain the cultural contamination and protect the primitive planet is to actually make him a superhero, which becomes his new assignment. They equip him with a proper ring and costume, and send him back to the planet.
Transwarp can fly unharmed through almost any environment by shrouding himself in a subspace field, travel at warp 9+ speeds on his own, faster than any starship speed record, as well as make energy constructs with the will of his mind. His one weakness is that he must recharge himself from a warp core every 24 hrs.
So he's Starfleet's answer to Green Lantern. I thought of involving 'Threshold' and Tom Paris, but... eh. Locarno seemed an easier fit. The costume will be blue and black/gray to match the warp core colors. He will naturally glow blue when using his powers.
Plus I had some thoughts on the 'Transwarp Corps.'
