Actually, it's a webisode they are airing. I forget how many episodes like this...but they follow a Walker attack in the air. (i.e. someone on board is sick, and presumably dies quickly enough to start an attack on the plane.)

So not a commercial.

Not sure if it will come into play next season

Typically, the webisodes operate on a fringe connection to the series.

• In "The Pact," a man and woman are the only survivors of their overrun camp, only to end up at the same hospital were Rick was in a coma.
• In "Cold Storage," the hero just so happened to find the Grimes family storage unit in his search for clothing, but that's where the connection ends.
• "Torn Apart" featured a split family, but the only connection to TWD was the featured character turned out to be the "bicycle girl" / torso zombie Rick encountered in the pilot.

The FTWD webisode could play it in another way, or maybe its just the the prologue to the brief shot of the plane flying out of control in the regular series.

Unless the pilots break the post 9.11 rules regarding opening the cockpit doors after the plane is in the air - there is no reason for the plane to crash.
