Favourite Trek Music

all the trek movies had great music, but TWOK had my 2nd favourite. The "Enterprise clears all moorings" music is quintessential trek movie music to me.

in terms of my favourite trek music:

1. Jerry Goldsmith's TMP/TNG main theme

2. James Horner's TWOK as linked above

3. First Contact music again by Jerry Goldsmith

4. Generations music by Dennis McCarthy

5. TOS intro music by Alexander Courage

6. TUC music by Cliff Eidelman

7. Voyager theme by Jerry Goldsmith

8. Enterprise S3-S4 intro by russell watson

never was a big fan of the DS9 music or the original 'Faith of the Heart' -- both too slow
really, though, all the trek music is so grand and inspiring. love it

Agreed, the "Enterprise Clears Moorings" cue in TWOK is simply great.

From The Undiscovered Country, I'd specify the entire opening, from the title through the big explosion. (A huge shame that someone of Eidelman's or Horner's generation wasn't hired for The Voyage Home.)

Goldsmith's music for TMP is a special case with special challenges that were met well by an old pro - I favor the Ilia theme (the overture before the start of the film proper; I presume the Director's Cut has it, but I haven't gotten around to seeing it).

From the original Star Trek, give me any of the music written for "Elaan of Troyius," "Amok Time," "Friday's Child," "Metamorphosis," "The Empath," "Is There in Truth No Beauty?" (the last three by my man George Duning). Also the alternative theme music by A. Courage for the second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (it's about a 20-second cue, and quite different in character from the music for the body of the episode, which uses the same 4-note motif).

From all of the later TV series, the theme that Picard adopts as his own in "The Inner Light" is essential, not least because it expresses itself (in a love story, yet) some episodes later. The rest is disposable for me, except perhaps for "The Best of Both Worlds," part 1.

One main reason for my interest in the Abrams Trek is that I want to hear what Giacchino can do. I am a big admirer of his music for Lost and The Incredibles (I know the latter wears well upon repeat viewings, but I can't evaluate the Lost music on a similar basis because I can't bear the thought of watching a Lost rerun!)

Here are some of my favorites...

First Contact first, by a mile.

The Undiscovered Country

Best of Both Worlds

I'm another showing the love for Fist Contacts theme. I really liked the score during the first contact scene with the Vulcans - it really was the star of that scene.

TUC's main theme was brilliant and really stands out, which is what I think Nick Meyer really wanted, though the TMP/TNG music is just wonderfully epic. Especially when I watch TMP back on the projector screen.

I like the version of Faith of the Heart used on Enterprise, and I like it with the titles... but with the show, I really doesn't click for me. It always feels as if it should have been on a fan video.

First Contact, TUC and TMP would be my favorites as well.

I grew up on TNG, so to me, Jerry Goldsmith's score pretty much is Star Trek.

"The Enterprise" (TMP OST) from the drydock scene never ceases to give me the goosebumps :techman:

TUC's score is my favorite movie score. In particular, as others have mentioned, I think the main theme is fantastic. It does such an excellent job IMHO of conveying the scope and the urgence of the situation in the movie. It also manages to communicate the suspense that is present throughout the film.

As for the TV shows, The Visitor IMHO has the most memorable and beautiful score. DS9, in general, seemed to me to have the best music of the later Trek shows from S4 onwards. However, it still didn't do nearly enough in that department in my view.
What I really like about the music on TOS was that it was never afraid of being really present and in your face, if it needed to be. It wasn't timid at all, and that was great. A lot of it is music I wouldn't listen to on its own. But it works very well with the show, I think.

There's a lot of good Trek music; but I bought the Star Trek III LP when it came out, and the Klingon themes on that were so invigorating that I made a tape exclusively of them, looping over and over. If you need music to strive by, break out that. "10,000 kelikamps!"

Ron Jones in the man! The music for BOBW was so good that they released it as an album. Later the same year he was fired because Berman thought his music was "too noticeable". Great move that, firing your most popular composer because his music is too good.

TUC has my favourite film score. Some very good stuff in that film, particularly the opening theme. James Horner did a great job with II and III.

I also think the score to Generations in under-rated. It doesn't set out to be epic, but I think it has some truly great tracks. I especially love this one from the nexus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hePNun577vM It's simple, yet haunting.

I used to love Goldsmith's themes when I was younger, but they haven't aged well with me. I still think they are great, especially the theme to First Contact, but I wouldn't consider them my favourites.

The Generations theme is nifty.

I also REALLY love the Ba'ku village theme from Insurrection.

The themes from "The Inner Light" and "The Visitor" are of course quite lovely. Though after hearing both on nearly every special feature on the DVDs, they lose a bit of their charm.

I really love both versions of the DS9 theme. The quirky time signatures in the early version, and the driving rhythm of the later one both compliment the themes going on in the show at the time.

I got a kick out of "Faith of the Heart." I thought the lyrics were really cheesy, but I did like what they tried to do. And the accompanying visuals gave me goosebumps.

'Pike and Vina Battle the Kaylar' cue from "The Cage" has a MAD TUBA SOLO or sumptin' going down. I'd like to hear it used in a Beastie Boys song.

The Taloson Mind Probe music gives me the willies every time. Very old school.

As a fan of Brian Tyler, I really love his take on the Borg in ENT "Regeneration". The music made the Borg strong and terrifying again !

Ron Jones' score was terrific in BOBW. He's the man for TNG. Chattaway and McCarthy are too... "episodics". The same ingredients here and there, and they fill the 40 minutes without any passion. That's too bad because they got the skills to do something very good.

For the movies, I think FC and TUC are ecellent. the themes are great. I can't wait for Giacchino's work for STXI.

I love the score to that episode, it really did make the Borg seem scary again for the first time since BOBW or First Contact.

The Klingon battle anthem from TMP is another of my favorites. I put in on whenever I get tired driving. It makes me want to start shouting commands in Klingon.

I'm partial to the Generations battle score, and was very pleasant surprised when it returned for "The Die is Cast" and "Way of the Warrior." Pretty epic for Trek.

Jerry Goldsmith - A New Sight (from ST-IX) - beautiful!

Dennis McCarthy - DS9 Main Title - goosebumps, every time

Jerry Goldsmith - "Inner light" theme

Jerry Goldsmith - "The Enterprise" - words don't describe it...
