Favourite SNW-Story?

Three I'm particularly fond of are "Isolation Ward 4" by Kevin G. Summers in #4, "Shadowed Allies" by Emily P. Bloch in #9, and the incredibly charming "Gumbo" by Amy Vincent in #8.

I dig 'em all because each one of those writers accomplished something I never will.

Besides the fact that doing the SNW story for Star Trek Communicator was my favorite thing to do each year I did it and I enjoyed the hell out of getting to know the contributors.

Well, except for that bastard Leisner. Okay, and Laudermilk is kind of a douche. And I liked Ted until he screwed up that whole good-touch-bad-touch boundary between us. Amy, well, I was fine with her until the restraining order. (Seriously, was that even f'ing necessary? I promised I'd never mess with your laundry again. Sheesh.)

Bubba D.

Oh god, yes! I loved "Gumbo"! It broke all the rules about what you're not supposed to do in fiction, and did it so well.

Amy, well, I was fine with her until the restraining order. (Seriously, was that even f'ing necessary? I promised I'd never mess with your laundry again. Sheesh.)

Bubba D.

Give me back my Star Trek-insignia thong, and we'll talk.

It's hanging on his rear-view mirror, along with a garter which -- oddly enough -- features several BBQ sauce stains.

Paint your own picture.

"Full Circle" by Scott Pearson springs to mind. "A Private Anecdote" was a well-deserved win. And "Triptych" was just dang clever.

I haven't read all the SNWs (shame on me!), but my two favorites are "Triptych" by Melissa Dickinson (SNW II) and "A Private Anecdote" by Landon Cary Dalton (SNW I).

I own all the volumes, but started to slip behind on reading them. Going strictly on the stories that remain most vivid in my head, at least in the emotional weight, would be "Triptych" (I hope it's the right one; Kirk and Spock fail in their attempts to alter time in "City on the Edge", and now Uhura and Scotty must make their own attempts leaping through the Guardian) and "Ribbons for Rosie", a Seven of Nine story.

My top-ranked SNW stories:

"What Went Through Data's Mind 0.68 Seconds Before the Satellite Hit" by Dylan Otto Krider (SNW I, TNG)
"Of Cabbages and Kings" by Franklin Thatcher (SNW I, TNG)
"Fiction" by jaQ Andrews (SNW I, VGR)
"Gods, Fate, and Fractals" by William Leisner (SNW II, TNG)
"Whatever You Do, Don't Read This Story" by Robert Jeschonek (SNW III, TNG)
"One of Forty-seven" by E. Catherine Tobler (SNW III, TNG)
"Personal Log" by Kevin Killiany (SNW IV, VGR)
"The Monkey Puzzle Box" by Kevin Killiany (SNW V, TNG)
"Dementia in D Minor" by Mary Sweeney (SNW V, TNG)
"Passages of Deceit" by Sarah A. Seaborne (SNW 08, TNG)
"The Immortality Blues" by Marc Carlson (SNW 09, Speculations)
"You Are Not in Space" by Edgar Governo (SNW 10, ENT)

Wow, heavy on the TNG, huh? Nothing to do with my series preferences, just the way it works out.

A few faves off the top of my head: Ambassador at Large, Isolation Ward 4, The Beginning, and The Soft Room by Geoffrey Thorne.

My top-ranked SNW stories:

(Some other stories get listed...)

"You Are Not in Space" by Edgar Governo (SNW 10, ENT)

Wow! Thank you very much for this high compliment...

My favourite SNW story of yours is...oh, wait. Crap.

Well, I do still enjoy your work. :techman:

On an on-topic note, I also think that "You Are Not in Space" and "Friends With the Sparrows" cover similar thematic territory, albeit differently...

SNW I
"The Last Tribble"
"What Went Through Data's Mind 0.68 Seconds Before the Satellite Hit"
"Good Night, Voyager"
"The Girl Who Controlled Gene Kelly's Feet"

SNW V
"The Monkey Puzzle Box"
"Dementia in D Minor"

SNW VII
"A Test of Character"
"Project Blue Book"
"The Trouble With Tribals"
Adventures in Jazz and Time"
"Full Circle"
"Infinite Bureaucracy"
"The Little Captain"
"I Have Broken the Prime Directive"
"Don't Cry"

SNW VIII
"Assignment: One"
"Don't Call Me Tiny"
"Morning Bells are Ringing"
"Gumbo"
"You May Kiss the Bride"
"Coffee with a Friend"
"Egg Drop Soup"

SNW IX
"A Bad Day for Koloth"
"The Last Tree on Ferenginar: A Ferengi Fable From the Future"

SNW X
"The Smell of Dead Roses"
"The Fate of Captain Ransom"

These are all the ones that I can distinctly remember. Out of them all, I think that The Smell of Dead Roses and Egg Drop Soup struck me the most, and that The Trouble with Tribals was one that amused me the most simply from the perspective it was told from.

I haven't responded before because, quite frankly, I like them all, and I still look at mine and wonder how it got in. 'tis a puzzlement.

I agree with a lot of those listed so far.

Loved Gumbo. Great stuff.

And I've said it before and I'll say it again, I bought VII for Law of Averages. :techman:

But yeah, there's quite a few good ones out there amongst the volumes.

Never met an SNW story I didn't like but ISOLATION WARD 4 is pretty damned stellar.

(thanks for Soft Room and Concurrence, guys.)

MAN, I wish that antho would come back.

The Tower of books has meanwhile arrived (The Dealer of volume 1 had some computer-problems and the book was not deliverable, but that still leaves enough material for he next months)

I decided to start with the stories at both ends of the timeline (Distant past and distant future), so far I read these:
SNW 2
SNW 2
Triptych, by Melissa Dickinson (Second Prize)
Reciprocity, by Brad Curry
I Am Become Death, by Franklin Thatcher

SNW 3
If I Lose Thee..., by Sarah A. Hoyt and Rebecca Lickiss (First Prize)
A Q to Swear By, by Shane Zeranski

SNW 4
Personal Log, by Kevin Killiany

SNW 5
The Peacemakers, by Alan James Garbers

SNW 6
Our Million-Year Mission, by Robert T. Jeschonek (Grand Prize)
The Beginning, by Annie Reed

SNW 8
Alpha & Omega, by Derek Tyler Attico (Grand Prize)

SNW 9
Gone Native by John Coffren
The Last Tree on Ferenginar: A Ferengi Fable From the Future by Mike McDevitt

The Beginning, Our Million Year Mission and Reciprocity ahve been the best so far, but the others were also quite good.

Once the far ends of the timeline are done, I'm going to continue with those which got a price and those recommended in this thread. BTW, thanks for the interesting comments here so far.

MAN, I wish that antho would come back.

Indeed, that would be awesome, but also highly unlikely. Especially the Speculations-Part is something I would love to see again in the future. Is Pocket Books accepting Short-story-submissions at all these days or are they just being send back to the authors? If so, given some time, enough stories for a new anthology should come together, even without a contest like SNW.
