Favourite lit characters

But really, I care more about the story than anything else. I don't want to see everyone pair off just for the sake of pairing off.

But having dates, pairing off, starting families or at least thinking about it is part of a given story. Some criticized the family-centric aspects in Greater than the Sum for instance, but for me they were the best part, besides the main plot. It makes me care for certain characters, some more, some less.

Funnily enough, it was implied at the end of Sword of Damocles that Keru was starting to move on at last and look to other people with sexual/romantic interest again. It's ambiguous, but it's there. I can't remember if it's been picked up on since (and Seize the Fire and Fallen Gods are often criticized for failing to move the characters forward and instead reducing them to their "original" characterizations. And Keru is only a minor player in stories set since).
