I just finished rewatching Shining and I thought it would be nice to see what kind of horror movies you guys like. Also, I am looking for a few recommendations. Usually I am open minded but I don't necessarily need a lot of blood. However, it always depends on the movie. Shining is a movie I really like despite the gallons of blood that are flooding the hotel. Saw on the other hand was too extreme for me. Some of my favourite horror movies are: - Alien / Aliens - Pitch Black - Shining - The Ring - Rosemary's baby - The Exorcist - The Orphan - The Sixth Sense - Nosferatu (what can I say, it's a real classic) - Even though it is actually a thriller I add Silence of the lambs to the list. What are your favourite ones?
Frankenstein (1931) Freaks (1932) King Kong (1933) Bride of Frankenstein (1935) The Wolf Man (1941) Cat People (1942) The Uninvited (1944) Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) House of Wax (1953) Psycho (1960) Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) The Haunting (1963) The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) The Other (1972) The Exorcist (1973) The Legend of Hell House (1973) Jaws (1975) Carrie (1976) The Changeling (1980) The Sender (1982) Re-Animator (1985) The Hitcher (1986) The Stepfather (1987) Misery (1990) The Sixth Sense (1999) The Others (2001)
All-time champ is the The Thing (Carpenter's 1984 version). In no particular order after that: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original - okay this one's in order, it almost ties for first place with The Thing) The Conjuring The Blair Witch Project The Mothman Prophecies Paranormal Activity (first one only) Rosemary's Baby Shadow of the Vampire The Seventh Victim Irreversible The Descent Deliverance The Devil's Rejects Blue Velvet The Grudge (the American remake version, for once) Inland Empire Alien Videodrome White Zombie (a Bela Lugosi classic and one of the few major zombie movies to actually put zombies in their original context) Messiah of Evil And of course, who could forget:
I don't like horror movies - one of the most tedious afternoons in the cinema was being taken to see Hellraiser. I find the gory ones dull and kind of pathetic, and most of the scary ones aren't. The few scary ones also don't appeal as I don't particularly enjoy being scared. Having said that, there's some of my favourite movies on the first list. I'd just never considered them horror movies. So, some of my favourite horror movies (or ones I at least consider good) are : - Alien / Aliens - The Terminator - Pitch Black - Event Horizon - The Hitcher - The Blair Witch Project - Halloween - A Nightmare On Elm Street and probably the best horror film I've seen - The Haunting (1963) Added by edit : - The Omen - Predator
I'm not much into horror films, but one of my favorites was a horror film with a bit of comedy in it called House, with William Katt. I like how he's in a haunted house that works on a very personal level. And once something happens, eh wouldn't always make a stupid decision... instead, he would do what we all would do in that situation. For example.. upon seeing a monster in the closet, the next shot shows a shipment of camera equipment arriving at the house. Plus, in the mirror, the creature there looks like a similar creature form the last scene of the Evil Dead 2 (another favorite of mine.
^ Well played, sir. Also, what am I saying? Forget John Carpenter. The greatest horror movie ever made -- the acme of the genre -- is The Vampire's Kiss: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfcJUl39iiA[/yt]
Alien The Descent The Orphanage Pan's Labyrinth The Orphanage The Devil's Backbone 28 Days Later The Last Exorcism Halloween Friday the 13th Parts 1,2,3,4,6,7 A Nightmare on Elm Street The Ruins
Personally, I don't concider Pan's Labyrinth or The Terminator to be horror movies, but one could argue that they have some scary elements. When I saw What Ever Happened to Baby Jane again a few weeks ago it wasn't quite as exciting as it was when I had watched the movie for the first time. Maybe I remembered it too well. Event Horizon grossed me out. Not the right movie for me, but I have a few acquaintances who claime that it is one of their favourites ones. The Devil's Backbone looks intersting. I will see if I can stream it via Amazon. Furthermore, I realized that I have never watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I already checked it out and couldn't find a streaming version of it in my country. Bummer.
And Soon The Darkness (1970) - A great horror movie that takes place entirely in broad daylight. There's a 2010 remake with Karl Urban but it's not nearly as memorable.
I'm a huge lover of horror movies. These are my all time favorites... Halloween (1978) Halloween II (1981) The Old Dark House (1932) Horror of Dracula (1958) It (1990) Psycho (1960) Psycho II (1983) New Nightmare (1994) The Shining (1980) Frankenstein (1931) Bride of Frankenstein (1935) The Invisible Man (1933) The Wolf Man (1941) Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) The Conjuring (2013) Prom Night ('1980) The Thing (1982) Targets (1968) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) Thriller (Awesome anthology series from the 1960s with Boris Karloff as the host) Black Christmas (1974) The Burning (1981) The Omen (trilogy) Dawn of the Dead (1978) Night of the Living Dead (1968) Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) When A Stranger Calls Back (I like this 1993 sequel much more than the original. Made for Showtime I think.)
No particular order: Halloween 1978 The Fog (original) Christine Carrie Cujo The Car The Thing (From Another World) Alien Aliens Predator The Duel Night of the Living Dead 1968 Pitch Black
I get it with all the classic horror movies. The Wolf Man did scare me some when I was a kid, but by an large, horror movies leave me in a state of "meh". However, there are a few exceptions, The Omen and most recentely, Paranormal Activity 1. PA1 scared the crap out of me. I was okay until the end of the movie. THAT was disturbing.
