I'm sure this has been done a thousand times before but I can't find a thread on it.

For me it's a toss up between Kirk and Picard. Very different characters and captains but equally great. Kirk being a man of action appeals to me slightly more. His fight scenes are legendary, especially with the Gorn:lol:

Sisko got better as time went on. By Season 4 I think he was comfortably in 3rd place.

Janeway was a mess. She didn't seem to know her mind a minute. Because of how she's acted and occasionally how she's written I still sort of like her but she was a dreadful captain.

Archer was a plank of wood. Scott Bakula was great in the fantastic Quantum Leap but he was so bland in Enterprise. I didn't think much of him as captain. Trip would have been better.

I included Pike since he was almost the regular captain of the original series. Not much to say about him really as he only had one episode under his belt.

Very hard choice for me between Kirk and Picard. As a character and as the original, I like Kirk (Shatner) a tad more, but I think Picard was portrayed a bit more realistically, as far as captains go. By the time one is a captain, they aren't supposed to be beaming down on every away mission. I also liked how Picard was more thoughtful and diplomatic but could be a man of action when needed. Picard, to me, represents what we might have seen of Kirk during his 5 year mission on the Enterprise-A. So, Picard narrowly gets the number 1 place.

Then the rest of the order for me is Sisko, Pike (alternate timeline), Archer, Janeway, Kirk (Pine), Pike (TOS).

I picked Sisko. He is not a conventional Captain. He might lack Picard's diplomatic skills, but he is tough. That's what was needed during the Dominion War.

I don't know why but I thought this was 'best' and not 'favourite' captain.

I voted for Picard as the best but Sisko is my favourite.

Kirk I'm very "meh" towards. Janeway had her good moments. Archer was awful as a captain and a character.

Picard is the most reasonable. He's a supporter of the arts and an expert diplomat. He weighs issues carefully and considers the opinions of everyone in his crew. He's also the only captain who hasn't intentionally thrown the Prime Directive out the airlock at least a dozen times -- sans Archer for obvious reasons.

While Picard is my favorite character, I concede that he's not entirely realistic. It seems that the character of Picard has absorbed a bit too much of Roddenberry's vision. Meaning that he's almost too perfect to be believable. Picard needed to be just a little bit more like Kirk.

I'd rank the captains in this order from favorite to least favorite.

Picard
Kirk (Shatner)
Archer
Sisko
Pike (Greenwood)
Pike (Hunter)
Janeway
Kirk (Pine)

Picard, no contest.
Kirk was a cowboy.

Kirk wasn't any more of a cowboy than Picard was. Throughout the original series, Kirk was more often than not a strict by-the-book type of guy. Sure, Kirk sometimes interpreted regulations in a "unique" manner in order to solve the problem of the week but every captain (Picard included) has done the same. The only incident I can think of where Kirk flat-out said "screw the rules" was Star Trek III.
