As much as I love romantic comedies, and especially love to watch them on Valentine's Day, the truth is, every year I watch two movies. One of those, and then something to "cleanse the palate" — remind me that the world isn't all hunky-dory, and the guy doesn't always get the girl (and when he does get the girl, it's not always heaven on earth).
Every Valentine's Day, I watch Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
The epic, caustic battle of wits and wills between George (Richard Burton) and Martha (Elizabeth Taylor) is absolutely brilliant to watch in action. As the night drags on and they get drunker and drunker, and tear each other apart in front of their guests (George Segal & Sandy Dennis), it's an awesome, soul-searing spectacle that you can't turn away from. The profanity and sexually charged dialogue that nearly threatened the film's release in 1966 are quaint today, but the emotional core of the film is still just as compelling 50 years later.
That's my V-Day counter-programming... does anyone else do this?
