Favorite Root Beer Brand?

I've always been curious about root beer, since in Italy it's almost unheard of. We don't even have a word to translate it. I would love to try it some day. It's solely an American product of you can find it in Europe as well (UK, Germany, etc)?

It should be an interesting experience for you.

I'd never had before moving to Canada and I drink it more than coke (not really wrapped in the Coke here and can't get Vanilla Coke any more).

When I had family and friends across from Australia in September, none of the liked Root Beer (then again Canadians generally don't like Vegemite).

Can't say I have a brand choice - just what ever is on sale when I'm at the supermarket so it tends to be the "home brands" but they aren't too bad. I've even picked up some nice home brand creaming soda (which btw should be red - non-red creaming soda is like non-orange Fanta - just not right) as home brand

I had never tried it before, and people were raving about it at some gathering, so I tried some. Ick! I've tried it a few times since then but I really loathe it. So, don't get your hopes up too much.

Well, I'm not really big on soda in general (I might drink maybe one glass a week), but I like trying new flavours.

I don't expect it to be great, but I am curious since I have no idea what it tastes like.

By the way, had any of you tried chinotto soft drinks? They are very popular in Italy, but I've never saw them abroad. You may know it as sour orange or by the brand name Chinò.

There is the root of a plant that tastes like root beer and people say it's poisonous, but whatever. I don't believe them.

I've had it a couple of times back in Australai but I'm not sure how wide spread it was i.e whether it was specialist import for the Italian community or whether it was reasonable wide spread.

Quark: I want you to try something. It's an Earth drink. Root beer.
Garak: I couldn't...
Quark: Go on.
Garak: It's vile!
Quark: It's so happy and bubbly and cloy.
Garak: Just like the Federation.
Quark: You know what's worse? If you drink enough of it, you start to like it.
Garak: It's insidious.
Quark: Just like the Federation.

Barq's... in the glass bottles... It's good.

I have never drunk a root beer in my entire life. I am not sure if I have ever seen it on sale here.

Edited to add - can someone tell me if root beer is similar to sarsaparilla. I have drunk sarsaparilla many years ago but didn't like it.

I wouldn't say that it's like Sasparillia as it's sold in Australia at least. It had an anaced (licorice) taste and which I don't find with Rootbeer.

Funny thing is that I like licorice but coulnd't standn't Sasparilla.

Barq's is weird because I really don't think it should be calling itself "root beer." I don't mind it, but it doesn't taste anything like any other root beer I've ever had. I think it's actually its own flavor, but they just decided to lump it in the root beer category.

Jones cream soda tastes like cotton candy.

If I remember Barg's is like a cream root beer soda flavor.

I just got some Root Beer today from Wal-Mart while I was getting groceries for my parents...it is Wal-Mart's brand though...I don't mind it too much.

I enjoy the occasional Brio when I go to the nearby Italian place for lunch. I don't know if it's really from Italy (they claim it is), or if it originated here.

Ugh. Root beer is the distant nephew of licorice and the estranged 2nd cousin of cherry coke.

Everything on that side of the food island can just sink into the ocean as far as I'm concerned.

Am I the only filthy hippie to drink Hansen's Cane soda root beer from Trader Joe's? No caffeine and no high fructose corn syrup.
